The Fast Foiling Ferry or F3 (pronounced “F Cube”) is the fruit of a technical and commercial partnership between Alwena Shipping, MerConcept and VPLP Design. It’s an innovative ship concept which lays the groundwork for achieving energy transition in the sea transportation sector.The F3 was originally developed in 2020 as a versatile 30 m catamaran for transporting passengers and came in two versions:
- F3 passenger ferry, able to carry between 100 and 200 passengers over medium distances,
- F3 offshore, to carry out professional crew changes for offshore operations, such as oil fields or floating wind turbines. In this particular version, the F3 is designed to compete directly with helicopter services which currently undertake such work, thanks to her high cruising speed and her operating range of 500 nautical miles. Skimming over the water on foils, the ship can cruise at 44 knots and uses 40% less fuel than a similarly sized displacement craft.
VPLP Design presents the city version (24 m) at the Euromaritime boat show in Marseilles, 28–30 June. This new version is a 24 m catamaran designed for urban passenger transport. This concept is a potential solution to the need for fast, quiet and energy efficient mobility in densely populated coastal cities.
Skimming over the water on foils, the ship can carry up to 220 passengers at a cruising speed of 35 knots and uses 40% less fuel than a similarly sized displacement craft.
