Managed by <\/span><b>Alain Th\u00e9bault<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, working tirelessly in the wake of <\/span><b>Eric Tabarly<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the project was first discussed back in the 1980s. However it took until 1994 for the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hydropt\u00e8re<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be finally commissioned. Originally the idea was to build <\/span><b>a foiling tall ship<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that could break ocean sailing records. Over time, however, the goal of the project shifted towards <\/span><b>setting sailing-speed records<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Hydroptere - The epic in 7 minutes\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/BB8LKjZjAyk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This objective was achieved in September 2009 when she broke the symbolic <\/span><b>50-knot barrier<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, sustaining an average speed of 51.36 knots over a stretch of 500 metres\u2026 and briefly exceeding 55 knots. In 2013 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hydropt\u00e8re<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> returned to her initial vocation and lined up for the Los Angeles-Honolulu record, before staying in Hawaii for a few years.
