Much of the design is based on its experience acquired in the America\u2019s Cup, notably on <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i>USA 17<\/i><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which won the 2010 edition. The starting point was a very simple observation that, while this type of rig had already proved itself in terms of performance, it was missing two decisive functions if it was to satisfy this particular market: the capacity to<strong> reduce or increase its surface area<\/strong>, and a <strong>fully automated<\/strong> control system. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"Oceanwings\u00ae\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/hLzryN7ssDg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>An initial 8 m prototype<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was designed and installed on<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i>Gwalaz<\/i><\/span>, <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a 7 m bio-composite Tricat developed by Roland Jourdain\u2019s company Ka\u00efros, to study the feasibility of a <strong>360\u00b0 rotating rig<\/strong> and to test all its associated systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-10170\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/oceanwings-vplp-design-projet-min-768x512-1.jpg\" alt=\" width=\" height=\"468\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2019 two Oceanwings were installed on <strong>Energy Observer<\/strong> as demonstrators and to provide useful feedback for the development of the technology and its associated software. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-10172\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/oceanwings-energy-observer-vplp-design-768x352-1.jpg\" alt=\" width=\" height=\"322\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the principle largely validated (performance equal to a conventional sail plan with a surface area reduced more or less by half), VPLP\u2019s goal is now to <strong>make wingsails available for all types of sailing<\/strong>, from yachting to fishing vessels and the shipping industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>The first commercial application of these wingsails will be the cargo ship <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/en\/maritime\/canopee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canop\u00e9e<\/a><\/strong>, designed by VPLP to transport parts of the Ariane 6 rocket. <strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Powered<\/span><\/strong> by four 363 m\u00b2 wingsails set on 36 m masts, Canop\u00e9e is scheduled for launch <strong>in late 2022.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-10184\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/canopee-fusee-ariane-cargo-vplp-768x495-2.jpg\" alt=\" width=\" height=\"451\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In recent years VPLP has designed numerous \u201cwing yachts\u201d (Komorebi, the studio-boat, Evidence, EMC\u2026) that leverage <strong>this patented technology<\/strong> to <strong>drastically reduce fuel consumption<\/strong> when combined with a diesel or diesel-electric propulsion system.
