MACIF\u00a0100<\/i><\/b> then <\/span>Actual Ultim\u00a03<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n

Macif <\/span><\/i>was designed in close collaboration with <\/span>Fran\u00e7ois Gabart<\/b> and his technical team, fresh from their wins in the Vend\u00e9e Globe and the Route du Rhum. The remit was to produce <\/span>a boat for solo and short-handed racing and record-breaking<\/b>. Launched in 2015, she is almost as beamy as her rivals and carries the same amount of sail, but weighs in <\/span>two tonnes lighter<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Her most obvious innovation is the <\/span>compact cockpit<\/b> \u2013 \u201cthe shed\u201d \u2013 which contains the working ends of the lines, the accommodation and the nav station in the same <\/span>sheltered and enclosed space<\/b>. Accessed via a hatch in the cockpit, the centre hull houses the engines, batteries, ballast tanks, food store and the equipment locker.<\/span><\/p>\n

The rudders feature <\/span>adjustable-pitch elevators<\/b> to trim the boat, while the foils provide maximum stability when in foiling mode. She was fitted with <\/span>new appendages<\/b> during a major refit in 2018 to improve her foiling capabilities.<\/span><\/p>\n

With Fran\u00e7ois Gabart at the controls, <\/span>Macif<\/span><\/i> won every race she entered (Transat Jacques Vabre, The Transat, The Bridge), except the 2018 Route du Rhum when, hampered by the loss of a foil and a rudder, Francis Joyon beat her by a canvas. Unsurprisingly she currently holds the <\/span>Antoine de Saint-Exup\u00e9ry Trophy<\/b>,<\/span> the solo round the world record under sail of 42 days, 16 hours and 40 minutes.<\/span><\/p>\n
