The Navire Avenir is a rescue vessel developed for the non-profit organization SOS\u00a0M\u00e9diterran\u00e9e<\/em>, and the first of a European fleet. Numerous designers are involved in\u00a0the project, including about fifty research groups and art, design and architecture\u00a0schools from Europe and South America. VPLP Design has been commissioned to\u00a0design the vessel in collaboration with Marc Ferrand.<\/p>\n

\u201cConsidering the current migrations and those to come, it\u2019s crazy that mankind hasn\u2019t\u00a0yet developed suitable tools for what the members of SOS M\u00e9diterran\u00e9e<\/em> call \u2018mass\u00a0rescue\u2019,\u201d says S\u00e9bastien Thi\u00e9ry, the driving force behind the Navire Avenir and\u00a0action coordinator at the non-profit organization PEROU<\/em>.<\/p>\n

The 69-metre ship will be operating in the international waters off Libya where\u00a0migrants try every day to cross the Mediterranean Sea on makeshift boats.\u00a0Thanks\u00a0to two ramps situated in the sterns of each hull, SOS M\u00e9diterran\u00e9e<\/em> rescue teams will\u00a0be able to deploy two 10-metre rigid-inflatable rescue boats rapidly, even in rough\u00a0weather.<\/p>\n

Once aboard, survivors who are in a critical condition will be able to receive\u00a0treatment in a veritable sea-going casualty department. Particular attention is paid to\u00a0caring for women, including the possibility of accessing gynaecological consultations\u00a0and psychological therapies.\u00a0Total capacity is approximately 370 casualties and includes a superstructure called\u00a0\u201cthe refuge\u201d which has sanitation facilities and a large sleeping area that can be\u00a0configured using movable partition walls.<\/p>\n
