In the run-up to an important announcement in this connection at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monacoyachtshow.com\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Monaco Yacht Show<\/a> (23\u201326 September), partner architect <\/em><strong>Quentin Lucet<\/strong> walks us through the wing yacht concept developed by VPLP Design to align the firm with the reality of maritime practices, present and future.<\/em><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Valencia, February 2010. It could be said that the conclusive victory of BMW Oracle\u2019s trimaran <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/en\/racing\/usa17\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">USA 17<\/a> over Swiss catamaran Alinghi <strong>was a question of rigging rather than hull structure.<\/strong> At 68 metres tall \u2013 which is one and a half times the length of an Airbus A380 wing \u2013 USA 17\u2019s wingsail demonstrated incontestably its superiority over a conventional sail, thanks in particular to nine flaps that can be trimmed independently. It resulted in VPLP Design\u2019s name being added to the oldest sporting trophy in history and marked, in Quentin Lucet\u2019s view, \u201c<strong>a decisive moment in the transfer of expertise from aeronautics to sailing.&#8221;<\/strong> <br><br>This initial experience encouraged VPLP\u2019s architects and engineers to reflect on how <strong>to extend the concept<\/strong> to other uses, especially to the shipping sector which consumes vast amounts of fossil fuels. This led to the creation in 2015 of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oceanwings.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ocean Wings<\/a>, a company tasked with developing <strong>an automated and reefable propulsion system<\/strong> that could be operated by a non-specialist crew. <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c7a768c9f19b3f62af9083017d22f2df\" id=\"h-a-revolution-in-ten-years\" style=\"color:#6c879a\"><strong><strong>A Revolution in Ten Years<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Installing the first demonstrator on a small production trimaran established the basic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/en\/specials\/oceanwings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">concept of OceanWings<\/a>, VPLP Design\u2019s very own wingsail. <em>\u201cOur guiding principle was to retain a rigid structure of composite ribs to manage profile and distortions,\u201d says Quentin Lucet. \u201cThe camber of the two sail flaps is achieved through the use of two independent masts. This offers <\/em><strong>an infinite number of trimming possibilities so you can play with its profile and aerodynamic lift<\/strong>, and thus the ship\u2019s propulsion.\u201d<br><br>In 2020, VPLP Design was commissioned to design <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/en\/maritime\/canopee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Canop\u00e9e<\/a>, a 121-metre RORO vessel destined to transport parts of the Ariane 6 rocket from Europe to French Guiana. The project turned out to be a <strong>veritable proof of concept<\/strong> for the system. Launched in 2023 with four wingsails of 363 m\u00b2 area, the ship amply demonstrated the effectiveness of the concept because it enabled <strong>fuel savings of 25\u201350%<\/strong> compared to a ship powered solely by conventional engines. With the same goal of proving that wind-assisted propulsion is a real solution to the problems involved in decarbonizing maritime transport,<strong>two OceanWings were installed on <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy-observer.org\/vessels\/eo1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Energy Observer 1<\/a>, a catamaran which sailed round the world without the aid of fossil fuels. <br><br><em>\u201cAnother example <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/modx-catamarans.com\/en\/modx-70\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>the MODX 70<\/em><\/a> <em>(<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/en\/news\/modx-70-the-culmination-of-a-revolutionary-design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>see our article)<\/em><\/a> <em>launched in 2025, the first cruising yacht to feature a wingsail on each hull. And last but not least, in addition to all these projects, over the last ten years <\/em><strong><em>we have produced numerous wing-yacht concepts,<\/em><\/strong><em>such as <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/en\/cruising\/komorebi-138\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Komorebi 138<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/en\/maritime\/atelier-des-tropiques\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>the Studio Boat<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/en\/cruising\/w-y-evidence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Evidence<\/em><\/a><em>, <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/en\/maritime-en\/emc-mono\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>EMC<\/em><\/a><em> and <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/en\/cruising\/aperio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Aperio<\/em><\/a><em><em>\u201c<\/em><\/em>, adds Quentin Lucet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-9c8c3b82edc0f7b66d2fb8252350afb3\" id=\"h-tipping-point\" style=\"color:#6c879a\"><strong>Tipping Point<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>All these projects illustrate VPLP Design\u2019s <strong>real and continual commitment to more responsible maritime practices<\/strong>. Architects consider that the market has reached, to quote Quentin Lucet, \u201ca tipping point\u201d which should lead <strong>to a general uptake of these wing yachts<\/strong> which combine performance, ease of use and energy sobriety. This has been amply demonstrated in the last ten years and more.  <br><br>In the same vein, VPLP Design will be presenting at the next <a href=\"https:\/\/www.monacoyachtshow.com\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Monaco Yacht Show<\/a> (23\u201326 September), in collaboration with the Italian design agency <a href=\"https:\/\/michelettipartners.com\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Micheletti+Partners<\/a>, a <strong>new wing yacht project of a size never before seen<\/strong>. \u201cWith Luccio Micheletti and his team, our spheres of influence are different yet complementary,\u201d says Quentin Lucet who, despite his enthusiasm, will be keeping the details of this particularly ambitious project under wraps until September.
