Present at the finishing line in Fort-de-France, <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/antoine-lauriot-pr%C3%A9vost-81711880\/\"><em><strong>Antoine Lauriot Pr\u00e9vost<\/strong><\/em><\/a> and <strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/xavier-guilbaud-0039671\/\">Xavier Guilbaud<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, partner naval architects at VPLP, talk us through the lessons learned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ligne-blanche-1024x1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ligne-blanche-1024x1.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ligne-blanche-300x1.png 300w, https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ligne-blanche-150x1.png 150w, https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ligne-blanche-768x1.png 768w, https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ligne-blanche.png 1465w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-712464f929e24bf52cfdd6aad2dcdbd8\" id=\"h-ultim-svr-lazartigue-s-perfect-race\" style=\"color:#6c879a;font-size:25px\"><strong>Ultim: <em>SVR Lazartigue<\/em>\u2019s perfect race<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ligne-blanche-1024x1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ligne-blanche-1024x1.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ligne-blanche-300x1.png 300w, https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ligne-blanche-150x1.png 150w, https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ligne-blanche-768x1.png 768w, https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ligne-blanche.png 1465w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>After two second places in the two preceding editions of the two-handed Atlantic race, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/en\/racing\/svr-lazartigue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">S<em>VR Lazartigue<\/em><\/a> <strong>has finally achieved the win<\/strong> expected of her since her launch in 2021. \u201c<em>Tom <\/em>[Laperche] <em>and Franck<\/em> [Cammas] <em>were the favourites, but it\u2019s still a transatlantic race on highly technical boats with all the associated contingencies, and that\u2019s what we saw, in particular with the damage to<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/en\/racing\/maxi-banque-populaire-xi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Banque Populaire XI<\/a>,<em>\u201d<\/em> says Antoine Lauriot Pr\u00e9vost. <em>\u201cThe delayed start of Armel <\/em>[Le Cl\u00e9ac\u2019h] <em>and Seb <\/em>[S\u00e9bastien Josse] <em>in Lorient <\/em>[due to a damaged rudder, eventually finishing fourth in Martinique] <em>obviously felt like a missed chance because <strong>a duel with <\/strong><\/em><strong>SVR Lazartigue<\/strong><em><strong>would have allowed us to really get the measure of Banque Populaire XI\u2019s new foils<\/strong><\/em>,\u201d adds Xavier Guilbaud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both architects agree that Tom Laperche and Franck Cammas ran <strong>\u201ca perfect race\u201d<\/strong>, taking control from the very start, and resisting the attacks from <em>Sodebo Ultim 3<\/em>, which, like all the other Ultims, has greatly improved \u2013 proof that the entire class is raising the bar. It was during the run south that <strong><em>SVR Lazartigue <\/em>managed to capitalize on her advantage to windward, before showing herself to be very steady when reaching<\/strong>, which has been a bit of an Achilles heel up until now. \u201c<em>The crew have made great progress on this point of sail, notably thanks to the aborted attempts on the Jules Verne Trophy last winter, a saving grace of sorts,<\/em>\u201d says Xavier Guilbaud. \u201c<em>The debriefing in Fort-de-France suggested that Tom and Franck weren\u2019t flat out, that they realized a <strong>controlled crossing<\/strong>, and the boat arrived in the West Indies in perfect condition.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reason enough to plan for the future with confidence, which for <em>SVR Lazartigue<\/em> includes <strong>new foils<\/strong> next season (manufactured by CDK Technologies) and a <strong>new pair of rudders for the floats<\/strong>. \u201c<em>In the initial brief SVR Lazartigue dialled up the performance on the wind and reaching, with foils whose keenness and aspect ratio provided considerable lift for minimal drag,<\/em>\u201d says Xavier Guilbaud. \u201c<em>Today, they are looking for more versatility. Starting out as a typical downwinder, Banque Populaire XI has since moved in the opposite direction. It\u2019s striking to see how, when all\u2019s said and done, <strong>the specifications of both teams are converging<\/strong> in preparation for next year\u2019s Route du Rhum.<\/em>\u201d Which is all adding up to an even more exciting prospect!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ligne-blanche-1024x1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ligne-blanche-1024x1.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ligne-blanche-300x1.png 300w, https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ligne-blanche-150x1.png 150w, https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ligne-blanche-768x1.png 768w, https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ligne-blanche.png 1465w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-c94a30b2c98321cade786c5da891d3a3\" id=\"h-imoca-competitive-boats-and-talented-duos\" style=\"color:#6c879a;font-size:25px\"><strong>IMOCA: competitive boats<br>and talented duos <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ligne-blanche-1024x1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ligne-blanche-1024x1.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ligne-blanche-300x1.png 300w, https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ligne-blanche-150x1.png 150w, https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ligne-blanche-768x1.png 768w, https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ligne-blanche.png 1465w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Intensely physical and competitive, the IMOCA race also had a positive outcome for VPLP designs.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/en\/racing\/malizia3\/\"><em>11th Hour Racin<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">g<\/span><\/em><\/a>, crewed by Francesca Clapcich and Will Harris,&nbsp;<strong>took a very fine second place<\/strong>, while on the former&nbsp;<em>Charal<\/em>&nbsp;of 2018, now&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/en\/racing\/teamwork\/\"><em>TeamWork-Team Snef<\/em>,<\/a>&nbsp;<strong>Justine Mettraux and Xavier Macaire finished fifth<\/strong>. Launched last July,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/vplp.us13.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=3f21a64983f6fe6e7d2e5d44f&amp;id=337e5f5b2f&amp;e=34f4102e12\"><strong><em>Les P\u2019tits Doudous<\/em><\/strong><\/a> crewed by Armel Tripon and Tanguy Leglatin, despite some understandable teething problems and a pit stop in Cascais, achieved <strong>her overriding mission, that of crossing the Atlantic<\/strong>, to finish 12th at Fort-de-France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cIn terms of accountability, it\u2019s been a <strong>fine result for VPLP and on the human side of things, it\u2019s wonderful,<\/strong>\u201d<\/em> says Antoine Lauriot Pr\u00e9vost, particularly satisfied with the second place of the former <em>Malizia<\/em>, launched in 2022. <em>\u201cWe were aware of the boat\u2019s potential and the talent of the crew, but Francesca only discovered the boat this year, so finishing ahead of <\/em><strong>Macif Sant\u00e9 Pr\u00e9voyance <em>was a very fine performance.<\/em><\/strong><em> The trade wind was very unstable and as soon as it started blowing more than 20 knots, Francesca and Will had the advantage. <\/em>It\u2019s a wind range where TeamWork-Team Snef <em>found itself lacking compared to the 2022\u20132025 generation of designs.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Designed, at the request of its previous skipper Boris Herrmann, to be sturdy and competitive on a broad reach in a breeze and a heavy sea, <strong><em>11th Hour Racing<\/em> proved on its passage through the Canaries that it was also very at ease in light winds<\/strong>. Antoine Lauriot Pr\u00e9vost concludes: <em>\u201cThe difference in mass has evened out with the other IMOCAs which were notoriously reinforced after their launch in 2022. It\u2019s been very encouraging, notably for <\/em>Les P\u2019tits Doudous <em>which has the same hull for less displacement, a lower centre of gravity and next-generation foils, so more righting moment. The boats are all now <strong>on their way<\/strong> <strong>to being repaired<\/strong>, which is good news for the skippers and the class,\u201d <\/em>ays Antoine Lauriot Pr\u00e9vost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Lazare x Hellio<\/em>\u2019s flip having been caused by a broken float, probably the result of a collision, the focus fell upon the two other crews to explain in detail the circumstances of their capsizes. Antoine Lauriot Pr\u00e9vost gives his take:<em><strong> \u201cConditions in the Channel seem to have been very unstable both in force and direction,<\/strong> and this led to the two capsizing in very violent gusts. When you go from 20 knots on the bow to 35 knots on the beam, that changes everything on a multihull and the risk of capsizing is always very real.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wasn\u2019t this amplified by the tarp fairings designed to reduce the boats\u2019 aerodynamic drag? <em>\u201cTheir role in this is very difficult to quantify,\u201d<\/em> replies Antoine Lauriot Pr\u00e9vost, who will be discussing these issues with the technical committee of the Ocean Fifty class in the coming weeks. <em>\u201cOn light boats like these, they obviously reduce the critical angle where the vessel loses its ability to straighten up; however other Ocean Fiftys have capsized without tarp fairings. The moral of the story is to make sure you <strong>don\u2019t find yourself at those angles of heel.<\/strong>\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without a doubt the rest of the race was equally intense and exciting, with a compact group at the head of the fleet, and<strong> the first four crossed the line at Fort-de-France within 45 minutes<\/strong> <strong>of each other!<\/strong> It was hugely satisfying for <strong>VPLP, which bagged the first two places with<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/en\/racing\/viabilis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Viabilis Oc\u00e9ans<\/em><\/a> (Baptiste Hulin &amp; Thomas Rouxel, despite having made a pit stop in L\u2019Aber Wrac\u2019h at the start of the race) ahead of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/en\/racing\/inter-invest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Wewise <\/em><\/a>(Pierre Quiroga &amp; Gaston Morvan), two trimarans launched in 2017 and 2018 respectively. \u201c<em>This is the <strong>great strength of this class, managing to maintain the competitiveness of these older boats<\/strong>. Compared to other classes, it\u2019s a good signal and a just reward for Baptiste and Thomas who had bet their entire season on this race.<\/em>\u201d They were able to exploit the 4&#215;4 character of this Ocean Fifty which confirmed its capacity to take a breeze and a rough sea in its stride.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Represented in three of the four classes by resolute and talented duos, VPLP designs had a field day in the 17th edition of the Transat Caf\u00e9 L\u2019Or, with victories for SVR Lazartigue and Viabilis Oc\u00e9ans in the Ultim and Ocean Fifty classes, and a second place for 11th Hour Racingin the IMOCA class.
