{"id":22323,"date":"2025-09-24T16:16:06","date_gmt":"2025-09-24T14:16:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/actu\/eo3-energy-observers-future-research-abd-experdition-vessel\/"},"modified":"2025-09-24T16:41:14","modified_gmt":"2025-09-24T14:41:14","slug":"eo3-energy-observers-future-research-abd-experdition-vessel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/en\/news\/eo3-energy-observers-future-research-abd-experdition-vessel\/","title":{"rendered":"EO3, Energy Observer&#8217;s future research ABD experdition vessel"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>EO3<\/strong>, Energy Observer\u2019s new research vessel was unveiled on <a href=\"https:\/\/eo-production.imgix.net\/documents\/Press\/CP-Energy-Observer-EO3-FR.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>6 June 2025<\/em><\/a> <em>during the United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC) in Nice<\/em>.<em>The ship\u2019s objective is to explore <strong>new solutions for decarbonizing shipping and energy production<\/strong>. VPLP has almost completed EO3\u2019s design phase and the ship is scheduled to go into the water in the spring of 2027.   <\/em>VPLP managing partner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/simonwatin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Simon Watin <\/em><\/a><em>and naval architect in charge of the project <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/annabelle-cl%C3%A9menti-38369b108\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Annabelle Cl\u00e9menti<\/a> tell us more.<\/em> <\/p>\n\n<p>Once again Victorien Erussard has called on VPLP Design\u2019s expertise to design a new research vessel for the 2025\u20132033 expedition <strong><em>A Journey to Carbon Neutrality<\/em><\/strong>. A replacement for <em>EO1<\/em>, this new ship represents a certain continuity because <strong>the ties between VPLP and Energy Observer go back to 2015<\/strong>. \u201c<em>It all started when Marc Van Peteghem met Victorien<\/em>,\u201d recalls Simon Watin. \u201c<em>VPLP gave him a hand in designing the <strong>superstructure <\/strong>of<\/em> <strong>EO1<\/strong>,<em> which was also one of the first vessels to feature our Oceanwings solution.<\/em><em>\u201d<\/em>  <\/p>\n\n<p>It was a <em>win-win <\/em>solution according to Simon because the wingsails developed by VPLP Design and installed on the catamaran (formerly <em>Enza <\/em>owned by Peter Blake and erstwhile holder of the Jules Verne Trophy) could be thoroughly tested <strong>during the 68,000 nautical miles of the seven-year Odyssey expedition (2017\u20132024)<\/strong>. Throughout her long voyage from Europe to Japan, the United States of America to Spitsbergen, <em>EO1 <\/em>continued to promote <strong>solutions for energy independence and meet the people driving the projects.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n<p>This same goal has shaped the design of Energy Observer\u2019s next research vessel. <em>\u201c<\/em>EO3 <em>will be an <strong>experimental boat, an expedition catamaran and a venue for meetings<\/strong><\/em>,\u201d says Simon Watin. \u201c<em>She will also be built to merchant marine standards<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>Thirty metres long and 12 metres in the beam, the catamaran will displace 125 tonnes and be powered by <strong>four Oceanwings<\/strong> wingsails that will not encroach on the living spaces. Designed to carry 18 people on deep-sea voyages in relative comfort, this new vessel represents a <strong>radical change of scale<\/strong> compared to her predecessor. \u201cEO1 <em>was limited<\/em> <em> by her size and accesses,\u201d says Simon Watin, \u201cwhich meant the technologies had to be adjusted accordingly. This time, EO3 is <strong>completely different space-wise<\/strong>. This will allow us to integrate the energy technologies identified in the team\u2019s programme. She will also be able to accommodate other prototypes of decarbonized power-production systems  <\/em>so they can be tested and proven on the high seas.\u201d <\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ligne-blanche-1024x1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ligne-blanche-1024x1.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ligne-blanche-300x1.png 300w, https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ligne-blanche-150x1.png 150w, https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ligne-blanche-768x1.png 768w, https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ligne-blanche.png 1465w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-27f9cfe3fca2ffba5d72f1efce148d43\" id=\"h-un-mix-energetique-ambitieux\" style=\"color:#6c879a;font-size:25px\">An Ambitious Energy Mix<\/h2>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ligne-blanche-1024x1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-21219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ligne-blanche-1024x1.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ligne-blanche-300x1.png 300w, https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ligne-blanche-150x1.png 150w, https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ligne-blanche-768x1.png 768w, https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/Ligne-blanche.png 1465w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>Shipyards are currently being consulted <strong>with the aim of building the ship in France<\/strong>. <em>\u201cThe hulls will be aluminium and we would like the superstructures to be FRP,\u201d<\/em> says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/annabelle-cl%C3%A9menti-38369b108\/?originalSubdomain=fr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Annabelle Cl\u00e9menti<\/a>, project leader at VPLP Design. \u201c<em>This makes regulatory compliance more complex but the gains in mass would be significant and allow greater freedom in the design<\/em>.\u201d For the latter, VPLP is collaborating with <strong>automotive designer<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.felixgodarddesign.com\/\">F\u00e9lix Godard<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p><em>EO3 <\/em>is aiming for total energy independence through 140 m\u00b2 of solar panels on deck and, as an auxiliary power source, <strong>energy produced from ammonia<\/strong>. \u201c<em>There will be an ammonia cracker aboard to produce hydrogen for fuel cells,\u201d says Annabelle, \u201cwhich is a promising avenue to explore<\/em>.\u201d The current state of the art in battery technology centres on three sources of energy: difficult-to-store hydrogen, CO2-emitting methanol, and ammonia. <em>\u201cEach has its advantages and drawbacks,\u201d says Simon Watin. \u201c<strong>Ammonia is an attractive solution because it\u2019s carbon free<\/strong>, although it\u2019s nitrogen oxide (NOx)<\/em> <em>emissions must be managed to prevent exposure to the crew.<\/em>\u201d  <\/p>\n\n<p>Focused on experimentation, <em>EO3 <\/em>also aims to be <strong>a test bed for clean energy solutions<\/strong>, with the ambition to paving the way for industrial and regulatory projects. \u201c<em>Energy Observer was created by sailors from the offshore racing fraternity,\u201d explains Simon Watin. \u201cToday, Victorien and his team run a professional operation which has the ear of maritime authorities, certification agencies, and manufacturers. <strong>They are very credible and we are delighted to accompany them in their endeavours<\/strong><\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>EO3, Energy Observer\u2019s new research vessel was unveiled on 6 June 2025 during the United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC) in Nice.The ship\u2019s objective is to explore new solutions for decarbonizing shipping and energy production.
