{"id":22015,"date":"2025-05-22T14:31:41","date_gmt":"2025-05-22T12:31:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/actu\/modx-70-the-culmination-of-a-revolutionary-design\/"},"modified":"2025-05-22T15:29:59","modified_gmt":"2025-05-22T13:29:59","slug":"modx-70-the-culmination-of-a-revolutionary-design","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/en\/news\/modx-70-the-culmination-of-a-revolutionary-design\/","title":{"rendered":"MODX 70, the culmination of a revolutionary design"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>VPLP designed the <a href=\"https:\/\/modx-catamarans.com\/en\/modx-70\/\">MODX 70<\/a>, <strong><em>a cruising catamaran<\/em><\/strong> <em>equipped with two inflatable, automated and retractable wingsails and electric propulsion<\/em>, i<em>n accordance with the demanding and visionary design brief put together by French shipyard <a href=\"https:\/\/modx-catamarans.com\/en\/\">Oc\u00e9an D\u00e9veloppement<\/a> whose CEO is none other than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/franck-david-925446b6\/\">Franck David<\/a>, instigator of the MOD70 class back in 2008.<\/em><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/mathias-maurios-84702759\/\"> Mathias Maurios<\/a>, VPLP Partner Naval Architect, and project manager <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/st%C3%A9phane-d%C3%A9robert-a7602b83\/\">St\u00e9phane D\u00e9robert<\/a>, analyse the disruptive lines of this catamaran which was named <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/modx-catamarans_modx70-worldpremiere-sustainableinnovation-activity-7321212754466414592-_awE\/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop&amp;rcm=ACoAAAiJiI4BzTkQNn5c-7GxSYRKGNQFTOuzkfY\">Multiyacht of the Year 2025<\/a> at the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.multihulls-world.com\/160\/the-multihulls\/votes\/votes\">Multihull of the Year Awards<\/a> during the <strong>International Multihull Show in La Grande-Motte<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The modernity of the MODX 70 can be distilled into this brief definition: a large vessel with ultra-simplified handling and unlimited range that doesn\u2019t use fossil fuels. <em>\u201cWingsails have been part of the discourse for a while now,<\/em><strong><em> but everyone has been waiting for a real flagbearer for the technology.<\/em><\/strong><em> It\u2019s fantastic to see MODX pursue this ambition. This boat is neither a prototype nor a demonstrator. <\/em><strong><em>She\u2019s just the first series catamaran yacht to be entirely self-sufficient<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>in all aspects of her propulsion<\/em><\/strong><em>,\u201d<\/em> says Mathias Maurios, head of VPLP\u2019s Cruising Division.<\/p>\n<p>While the hull construction was entrusted to the Neel yard in La Rochelle, the systems and interiors were fitted by the Oc\u00e9an D\u00e9veloppement yard run by Franck David, former Olympic windsurfing champion at Barcelona 1992. As for the wingsails, they were developed by a new company: <a href=\"https:\/\/aeroforce.fr\/en\/\">Aeroforce<\/a>. At VPLP, the architectural design <em>\u201cbegan with<\/em><strong><em> structural and aerodynamic studies,<\/em><\/strong><em> two intimately linked subjects on this catamaran<\/em><strong>,\u201d<\/strong> says St\u00e9phane D\u00e9robert, recruited in 2021 by VPLP\u2019s agency in Nantes to manage this project.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The idea of placing a single wingsail at the centre of the vessel was quickly eliminated<\/strong>, the platform between the hulls being structurally insufficient. <em>\u201cThe twin wingsail solution was the inevitable choice,\u201d<\/em> says St\u00e9phane. \u201c<em>The studies showed that<\/em> <strong><em>adding a flap to the trailing edge <\/em><\/strong><em>would allow the rig to achieve the same performance as a single wingsail on most points of sailing. But we still had to put the theory into practice!\u201d<\/em> This is where Aeroforce, offshoot and technological partner of the MODX project \u2013 and patent holder of the innovation \u2013 comes in. The MODX 70\u2019s wingsails are currently <strong>the first to be both inflatable and retractable<\/strong>, set on a telescopic mast, and with fully automated trimming for incidence and camber. Both wingsails have been installed and the boat is currently undergoing sea trials at Lorient before sailing to La Grande Motte.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-la-performance-gage-d-autonomie-electrique\" style=\"color: #6c879a; font-size: 22px; text-align: center;\"><strong><em>\u201cHigh performance guarantees<br \/>\nelectrical self-sufficiency\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The lateral implantation of these wingsails was also given much thought. \u201c<em>We had to maximize the length of the booms while making sure they wouldn\u2019t touch when goosewinged for downwind sailing,<\/em>\u201d says St\u00e9phane D\u00e9robert. Lastly, the <strong>coachroof has been extended considerably towards the outboard side of the hulls<\/strong>, leaving a minimal sidedeck for harbour manoeuvres. Under sail, crew and passengers move from one cockpit to the other via the inside. <em>\u201c<\/em><strong><em>Stepping the wingsails in the hulls frees up the centre of the boat entirely<\/em><\/strong><em>, multiplying the possibilities considerably,\u201d<\/em> says Mathias Maurios. The crew can circulate around the helm station at the centre of the vessel, which gives the steerer a view of more than 270 \u00b0, and access the doors leading to the bows.<\/p>\n<p>Much of the superstructure is glazed and its wide design was <strong>extensively studied to integrate the systems<\/strong>, in particular the wingsail booms, but also the<strong> 75 square metres of solar panels<\/strong> that contribute to the vessel\u2019s electrical self-sufficiency. Under sail, the bulk of the battery charging is provided by <strong>two 40 kW electric motors<\/strong> connected to propshafts that are left to spin freely in hydrogenerator mode. <em>\u201cThis was another reason why we needed to design a relatively light boat with a high length to beam ratio.<\/em><strong><em> This elongated form guarantees high performance, and high performance guarantees electrical self-sufficiency.<\/em><\/strong> <em>. This is the key to the virtuous circle Franck David wanted to achieve right from the very start of our discussions,\u201d<\/em> explains St\u00e9phane D\u00e9robert.<\/p>\n<p>Visionary and pioneering, <strong>the MODX 70 features many other innovations<\/strong>, such as the tender well in the rostrum, the use of natural textiles for the interior upholstery, and the 40% biosourced resin in the PET cored layup of the hulls. The first build of the series, which is already being commercialized, has been presented at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.multicoque-online.com\/en\/\">International Multihull Show<\/a> where she was awarded Multiyacht of the Year prize at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.multihulls-world.com\/160\/the-multihulls\/votes\/votes\">2025 Multihull of the Year Awards<\/a>.
