May 2 to July 3, two very special months enter the annals of VPLP Design. May 2 marked the start of The Transat bakerly which pitted Francois Gabart (Macif<\/em>) against Thomas Coville (Sodebo<\/em>) in a solo duel aboard 30\u00a0metre plus monsters designed by VPLP, the victory going to the former Vendee Globe winner eight days later. June\u00a08 saw Thomas Coville update the record books of single-handed sailing with a historic twenty-four\u00a0hour run of 714\u00a0nautical miles. And\u00a0July 3 Francois Gabart raises the bar even higher to 785 miles !\u00a0What do the specialists say? Xavier Guilbaud keeps tabs on multihull development at VPLP\u2019s\u00a0design office in Vannes (Brittany):\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s a game changer.<\/em>\u00a0When Franck Cammas entered the Route du Rhum in 2010 aboard\u00a0<\/em>Groupama\u00a03, a VPLP design<\/em>\u00a0trimaran\u00a0built for the Jules Verne trophy, everyone thought he was crazy!<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n

So what made this sea change possible in just six short years? Significant progress has been made in every field: in preparing the boats, in the skippers\u2019 abilities, in weather forecasting, in autopilots \u2013 which are now incredible \u2013 and, last but not least, in boat design. Vincent Lauriot-Prevost explains:\u00a0\u201cWhen we designed\u00a0<\/em>Macif\u00a0our focus was on adapting every aspect of a 30 metre trimaran to single-handed sailing: dimensions, weight, power, living quarters, rigging and, of course, the foils and rudders which carry the boat at high speed.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

From machines built for crews and then adapted to solo racing, such as\u00a0Groupama\u00a03<\/em>\u00a0renamed\u00a0Banque Populaire<\/em>\u00a0and now\u00a0Idec<\/em>, we\u2019ve entered the era of made-for-purpose Ultimates like\u00a0Macif<\/em>. Vincent remembers:\u00a0\u201cFrancois Gabart told us he wanted a moped with an upgrade window of seven years.<\/em>\u00a0Thomas Coville\u2019s trimaran is more powerful (170 tonnes\/m\u00b2 versus 145) but not quite so responsive in the transition phases.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

And for Vincent that\u2019s the issue when it comes to making these craft fly:\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s the direction we\u2019re heading in and I think we\u2019ll soon be doing away with the centre-board.<\/em>\u00a0Over the last four years we\u2019ve made enormous progress on the foils thanks to tools developed in-house, such as hydro\/aero CFD, VPP and section design. We\u2019ve got three people working on this full time. Collaborations with the team at Artemis and with Gsea\/HDS have also borne fruit.\u201d\u00a0<\/em>Back at VPLP\u2019s\u00a0design office works are moving apace\u00a0on\u00a0Banque Populaire\u00a0IX<\/em>\u00a0(launch in 2017) in the firm conviction that we\u2019re witnessing the start of a new era!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
