Oceanwings\u00ae is a veritable disruptive innovation to ensure a simpler and more responsible approach to the sea and the elements.<\/span><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VPLP Design\u2019s interest in rigid sails came early, back in 2010, when we collaborated with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BMW Oracle, winner of the 33rd America\u2019s Cup. Subsequently we maintained our focus on this nascent technology by working with Team Hydros on the 2013 Little America\u2019s Cup and, that same year, with Artemis Racing. \u201cIt allowed us to acquire real design expertise, and convinced us of the bright future awaiting this type of rig on other vessels,\u201d recalls Marc Van Peteghem.<\/span><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While hulls and appendages have undergone spectacular changes in recent years (as we saw during the latest Vend\u00e9e Globe), rigging innovations have been somewhat less radical. Despite their superior aerodynamic efficiency no longer attracting doubt, wingsails possess a fundamental hindrance to their development: their rigidity! This limits their\u00a0<\/span><strong>capacity to reduce surface area<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in other words, they can\u2019t be reefed or furled like fabric sails. Until now, that is!<\/span><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oceanwings<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00ae by VPLP Design is a practical solution for overcoming these obstacles and a significant step down the road to increasing the adoption of wingsails. \u201cWe\u2019re offering a <\/span><strong>wind propulsion system<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0that is reliable, simple and automated,\u201d says Marc Van Peteghem. \u201cWe have developed a\u00a0<\/span><strong>reefable and furlable<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0rigging concept which exploits the aerodynamic qualities of\u00a0<\/span><strong>multi-elements profiles<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Financial aid from\u00a0<strong>ADEME<\/strong>, France\u2019s environment and energy management agency, enabled VPLP Design to produce an 8m\u00a0<strong>working prototype<\/strong>, validate feasibility, prove the systems work and acquire sailing data to fine-tune performance models developed in-house.<\/span><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><strong>Entirely automated, self-supporting and rotating 360\u00b0<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Oceanwings\u00ae adapts its angle of incidence to the vessel\u2019s point of sail to ensure optimal propulsion. Power is managed by trimming camber and twist. \u201cNot only does it provide exceptional control,\u201d explains Nicolas Sdez, the engineer in charge of the project, \u201cit\u2019s also efficient to the point of\u00a0<\/span><strong>halving the surface area required to propel a vessel under conventional sail<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d VPLP Design is developing several concepts which use this patented technology, such as the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/realisation\/komorebi\/58.html\">Komorebi<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0range,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/realisation\/komorebi-200-wingsails-exploration-trimaran\/58.html\">Komorebi 200\u2019<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/realisation\/eole-marine-colportage\/58.html\">EMC<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0cargo ships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/VPLP-Design-launches-Oceanwings\u00ae-The-Reefable-and-Furlable-Automated-Wingsail-6-300x138.jpg\" alt=\" width=\"580\" height=\"267\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VPLP Design wanted to know just\u00a0<\/span><strong>how big the fuel savings could be<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0when operating Oceanwings\u00ae\u00a0<\/span><strong>in conjunction with a traditional combustion-engine propulsion system<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0or, even better, a thermoelectric setup. So we joint-developed an original software solution which allowed us to make statistical predictions about energy consumption on optimized passages. Depending on routes and vessels, we identified reductions of\u00a0<\/span><strong>18% to 42%<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cThese figures are significant because\u00a0<\/span><strong>ships carry 90% of world trade<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, account for 5% of greenhouse gas emissions and produce vast quantities of fine particles. And volumes are expected to\u00a0<\/span><strong>increase twofold by 2050<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d warns Marc Van Peteghem.<\/span><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oceanwings<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00ae is all about making shipping more profitable and more environmentally responsible. Even though wind propulsion achieves double-digit fuel savings its use cannot give rise to additional and specialist crew. In other words, automation has to be an essential feature. By integrating manufacturing considerations early in the design stage, VPLP has managed to ensure that costs are on a par with the purchase of a high-performance rig and can be quickly recovered by commercial operators.<\/span><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As for the prototype, it was installed on an appropriately sized vessel built by Roland Jourdain\u2019s company Kairos. The 7m catamaran features\u00a0<\/span><strong>biocomposite\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">construction, including parts made from\u00a0<\/span><strong>flax fibre and recyclable thermoplastic resin<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s an approach which highlights a make-or-break characteristic: Oceanwings\u00ae must be suitable for\u00a0<\/span><strong>retrofitting to existing craft<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOceanwings<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00ae is not going to be compatible with every kind of vessel or with all the regions of the world,\u201d admits Marc Van Peteghem. \u201cNevertheless we are convinced that it has a role to play in <\/span><strong>recreational\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">boating,\u00a0<\/span><strong>yachting<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u00a0<\/span><strong>shipping\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(bulk carriers, chemical tankers, oil tankers\u2026) and deep-sea\u00a0<\/span><strong>fishing<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. We\u2019re currently refining the prototype and designing a second, rigid version which will be suitable for ships.
