VPLP designs will be making a lot of noise this autumn. While some of the firm\u2019s designs are waiting for a favourable weather window to make another record-breaking attempt, and others are setting out for Brazil in the coming days, new ones are on the drawing board and on the stocks\u2026\u00a0Vincent Lauriot-Pr\u00e9vost<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Quentin Lucet<\/em>\u00a0give us the latest news.<\/span>

ULTIMATES<\/b><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Four new VPLP designs for the Ultim class of ocean-racing trimarans are currently in the spotlight.\u00a0<\/span>Macif<\/a><\/em>\u00a0and Fran\u00e7ois Gabart are waiting to take a pop at Thomas Coville\u2019s record, while\u00a0<\/span>Spindrift<\/a><\/em>\u00a0and her crew under the command of Yann Guichard will soon be making a new bid for the Jules Verne Trophy. \u201cLaunched ten years ago, she has been modified on numerous occasions to improve performance, such as acquiring t-rudders and foil winglets, and she has been lightened too,\u201d says Vincent Lauriot-Pr\u00e9vost. \u201cLet\u2019s not forget that, only two years ago against Idec on the very same course, she regularly came out on top in terms of speed. The potential is there.\u201d As for\u00a0<\/span>Sodebo<\/em>, the next objective is the Transat Jacques Vabre: \u201cOn paper, she\u2019s from a previous generation but she\u2019s got something that her opponent hasn\u2019t: all her technical niggles have long been sorted out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The big event for the firm this autumn is the imminent launch of\u00a0<\/span>Banque Populaire\u00a0IX. \u201cWe\u2019ve retained the same righting moment as for Banque Populaire\u00a0VII (formerly\u00a0<\/span>Groupama\u00a0III<\/em>\u00a0and now\u00a0<\/span>Idec<\/em>), although we\u2019ve optimized all the other aspects, focusing in particular on mass and drag,\u201d says Vincent. \u201cThe idea is to exploit the advantages of hybrid mode, that is to say, to fly early and be competitive when not flying.\u201d The entire boat was designed and drawn by VPLP, with assistance from Gsea Design for the structural calculations and in collaboration with the Banque Populaire team.<\/span>

MULTI50<\/b><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Ciela Village<\/em>, the first of two Multi50s designed by VPLP, went into the water on 4\u00a0October in Port-la-For\u00eat (Brittany), just one month before the start of the Transat Jacques Vabre. We were running to a tight deadline. \u201cShe seems to have turned out well,\u201d says Quentin Lucet, who manages these projects at VPLP design. \u201cOn her very first outing she beat the previous Ciela\u2019s speed record!\u201d Ciela Village was built by CDK for Thierry Bouchard and is the first Multi50 to be designed specifically for foiling. \u201cThis meant we had to rethink our approach to hull shape and platform rigidity,\u201d adds Quentin. \u201cWe paid unprecedented attention to protecting the cockpit and belaying area.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Of the six Multi50s taking the starting line of the Transat Jacques Vabre, three are VPLP creations and four are equipped with one-design foils designed by the firm and Romaric Neyhousser. Elsewhere, Thibault Vauchel-Camus\u2019s VPLP-designed trimaran is entering the assembly phase at the Enata yard in Dubai.<\/span>

IMOCA<\/b><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Of the thirteen IMOCAs signed up for the Transat Jacques Vabre, seven were designed by VPLP-Verdier \u2013 in particular the foilers and the winner of the Vend\u00e9e Globe, now sailing for Bureau Vall\u00e9e. A notable presence in the running is the indestructible <\/span>Generali, formerly Safran. She was the first VPLP-Verdier design, launched back in 2007.<\/span><\/p>\n

Boats on the stocks include the new <\/span>Charal for J\u00e9r\u00e9mie Beyou. \u201cThe hull mould has been delivered to CDK. We reworked the concept considerably in order to integrate the foiling capability into its shape,\u201d says Quentin Lucet. \u201cWe are currently putting the finishing touches to a pioneering type of structure in collaboration with Gurit.\u201d Also, discussions are continuing on the\u00a0<\/span>affordable IMOCA project<\/a><\/em>\u00a0which the firm launched in the summer in association with CDK and Antoine Mermod.<\/span><\/p>\n
