The aim is to develop in-house the modelling and digital simulation tools that have become ubiquitous in the design of sea-going vessels, from racing thoroughbreds to cruising yachts and even working boats.<\/p>\n<p>Naval architecture is changing. Nowadays digital tools for modelling hulls, appendages, structures and rigging, for hydrostatic and hydrodynamic simulation and for performance prediction are of crucial importance. \u201cTest it, test it, test it! The goal is to get as close as possible to the real thing,\u201d says Vincent Lauriot-Pr\u00e9vost.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">And the consequence of this digital revolution for VPLP Design is an expanding pool of engineers working alongside its architects. No fewer than six engineers have joined the firm in the last three years, representing a third of VPLP\u2019s twenty-strong workforce.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Xavier Guisnel\u00a0(Ponts &amp; Chauss\u00e9es), currently the engineering department\u2019s coordinator, was the first to join VPLP Design back in 2013.\u00a0Adrien Letourneur\u00a0(EnstaParisTech) looks after the VPP and hydrodynamics; Nicolas Baral (PhD in materials science) is our structures specialist;\u00a0Philippe Orhan\u00a0(\u00c9cole Polytechnique) works on the VPP and CFDs; and Paul Kerdraon (\u00c9cole Polytechnique) is completing a thesis on the development of a dynamic simulator and the modelling of unsteady hydrodynamic phenomena.\u00a0Nicolas Sdez\u00a0(EnstaParisTech) is in charge of developing\u00a0Oceanwings\u00a0\u2013 the firm\u2019s automated and reefable wingsail \u2013 and the working boats that use the system. Last but not least,\u00a0Pierre Renaud\u00a0(Arts &amp; M\u00e9tiers ParisTech\/University of Southampton) focuses his efforts on\u00a0Voilavion, the foiling catamaran produced by Magnard Innovation for the general market.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">VPLP\u2019s Engineering Department is involved in every field of the firm\u2019s expertise. Racing is, of course, a major account: \u201cOver the last five years we have had to compete with technical teams which are cultivating their presence and digital resources,\u201d says Vincent Lauriot-Pr\u00e9vost. \u201cThat motivates us to focus on our core expertise: design and performance. The America\u2019s Cup between 2007 and 2010 was the watershed moment that made us realize this.\u201d Cruising yachts are also part of the trend: \u201cWe\u2019ve done performance prediction for various Lagoons,\u201d says Nicolas Sdez, \u201cand of course, we use pre-dimensioning and modelling tools for super-yachts.\u201d It\u2019s the same for working boats, a sector enjoying fast growth at VPLP Design: \u201cWe\u2019ve developed a sail\/motor routing algorithm for hybrid propulsion as part of the Oceanwings project,\u201d says Nicolas Sdez.<\/p>\n<div>In addition to working on products, VPLP engineers are also tasked with developing special tools for the firm\u2019s core business: Fluid structure interaction (FSI) software, sizing tools for appendages, VPP (velocity prediction program), dynamic simulator, automatic routines for CFDs\u2026 the list is long! \u201cEvery year the engineering department devotes about 30% of its budget to research and development,\u201d says Xavier Guisnel. \u201cThis type of organization requires a certain size and regular resources. But that\u2019s what makes VPLP special. It allows us to think and develop as a team in a variety technical fields. It\u2019s worth its weight in gold.
