The naval architecture firm has reached a new milestone with the development of a 121-metre-long RORO vessel for transporting components of the Ariane\u00a06 rocket from Europe to French Guiana. Equipped with four Oceanwings\u00ae, the vessel is designed to have the least impact possible on the environment.<\/span>

This is a major milestone in the history of VPLP, the design firm founded in 1983 by Marc Van Peteghem and Vincent Lauriot-Pr\u00e9vost. After competitive sailing, cruising and yachting, the firm has turned its attention to a new sector: maritime transport.<\/span>

ArianeGroup<\/a>, the primary contractor for the Ariane launch vehicle, put out a call for tenders concerning the transportation of the various parts of the new Ariane 6 launcher from Europe to the launch pad in Kourou, French Guiana. The contract to build\u00a0was awarded to the maritime company Aliz\u00e9s, a joint venture between the offshore services specialist\u00a0<\/span>Jifmar<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>Z\u00e9phyr & Bor\u00e9e<\/a>,\u00a0a young maritime company specializing in carbon-free transport.<\/span>

VPLP Design<\/span>\u00a0was entrusted by Aliz\u00e9s with the task of designing a ship \u2013 named Canop\u00e9e \u2013 in accordance with the specifications of the project. The design firm came up with a RORO vessel which is 121\u00a0m long and 23\u00a0m in the beam, and features a bridge in the bow and an open deck aft with high sides to protect the cargo.<\/span>

A major innovation,\u00a0<\/span>Canop\u00e9e\u2019s hybrid propulsion comprises four 30\u00a0m high\u00a0<\/span>Oceanwings\u00ae\u00a0providing a total surface area of 1,452 square metres. These wingsails assist the ship\u2019s main propulsion system to reduce fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions by an average of 30%.<\/span>

Designed by VPLP, Oceanwings\u00ae are automated and reefable soft wingsails associated with\u00a0a routing system developed separately. A new company,\u00a0<\/span>Ayro<\/a>, has been set up for the\u00a0specific purpose of developing Oceanwings\u00ae.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\"Transport<\/p>\n

Every aspect of\u00a0<\/span>Canop\u00e9e\u2019s design contributes to using less fuel and reducing her environmental impact: hull suitable for hybrid propulsion, optimized aero-hydrodynamics, dual fuel engines (LNG and MDO), variable pitch propellers, solar panels to cover energy requirements aboard ship\u2026 \u201cWe took a fresh look at the specifications, in particular performance and wind-generator mode, with the aim of facilitating operations and reducing fuel consumption,\u201d says Marc Van Peteghem, VPLP cofounder.\u00a0<\/span>

For VPLP Design, this project is the fruit of a long period of gestation which began with the firm\u2019s collaboration with BMW Oracle and victory in the 2010 America\u2019s Cup with a trimaran featuring a rigid wingsail. This experience left Marc Van Peteghem with the firm conviction that the expertise gained in the world of yacht racing could be applied to innovating maritime transport. \u201cShipping is facing new challenges, because it alone is responsible for 5% of greenhouse gasses, a figure that is set to double by the year\u00a02050.<\/span>\u00a0Pressure from institutions and the general public for clean transport is increasing and stricter regulations are coming into force.\u201d<\/span>

And the focus isn\u2019t just on cargo vessels, because VPLP is already looking into passenger ferries equipped with hydrofoils: \u201cThanks to foils, we can reduce fuel consumption by 30% to 35%,\u201d says Marc Van Peteghem.<\/span>

With experience, expertise and industry-specific tools, VPLP is placing its services at the disposal of the global effort to achieve carbon-free maritime transport, working in collaboration with established forces.<\/span><\/p>\n
