{"id":20068,"date":"2021-07-20T09:18:41","date_gmt":"2021-07-20T07:18:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev2024.vplp.fr\/actu\/maxi-banque-populaire-xi-une-conception-structurelle-entierement-revue\/"},"modified":"2024-04-30T13:23:42","modified_gmt":"2024-04-30T11:23:42","slug":"maxi-banque-populaire-xi-comprehensive-revision-of-the-structural-design","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/en\/news\/maxi-banque-populaire-xi-comprehensive-revision-of-the-structural-design\/","title":{"rendered":"Maxi Banque Populaire XI : <br> Comprehensive revision of the structural design"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/groupebpce.com\/en\/all-the-latest-news\/news\/2021\/launch-of-the-new-maxi-trimaran-banque-populaire-xi-the-ultim-class-epitome-of-audacity\"><em>Launched<\/em><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/groupebpce.com\/en\/all-the-latest-news\/news\/2021\/launch-of-the-new-maxi-trimaran-banque-populaire-xi-the-ultim-class-epitome-of-audacity\"><em>on<\/em><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/groupebpce.com\/en\/all-the-latest-news\/news\/2021\/launch-of-the-new-maxi-trimaran-banque-populaire-xi-the-ultim-class-epitome-of-audacity\"><em>\u00a027\u00a0<\/em><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/groupebpce.com\/en\/all-the-latest-news\/news\/2021\/launch-of-the-new-maxi-trimaran-banque-populaire-xi-the-ultim-class-epitome-of-audacity\"><em>April<\/em><\/a><em style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0after a two-year build at\u00a0<strong>CDK Technologies<\/strong>, the Maxi\u00a0<\/em><strong>Banque Populaire\u00a0XI<\/strong><em style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0impresses with carefully crafted aerodynamics and significantly larger foils.\u00a0Based on\u00a0<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Banque Populaire\u00a0IX<\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Armel Le Cl\u00e9ac\u2019h\u2019s latest Ultim rises more easily but is also heavier\u2026\u00a0<strong>Xavier Guilbaud<\/strong>, naval architect in charge of the project at VPLP Design, walks us through this paradox.<\/em><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With only three years separating them, it\u2019s difficult not to compare\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maxi Banque Populaire\u00a0XI<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0with her predecessor, especially as she\u00a0<\/span><strong>shares the same hull lines and rigging<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u2013 even if, unlike the floats, the hull has been redesigned. \u201cThe design brief began five years ago with Armel\u2019s previous Ultim,\u201d says Xavier Guilbaud. \u201c<\/span><strong>We weren\u2019t starting out with a blank page<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and, despite the structural issues which led to the major incident in the 2018 Route du Rhum, the boat was more or less ready to go. Nevertheless it was obvious to us that we really had to get it right. So we kept everything that worked well and developed what could be improved. We drew what lessons we could from what happened in the Route du Rhum and analysed all the feedback we received from the team which had spent several months sailing with her.\u201d<\/span><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Dual internal structure in the beams<\/strong><\/span><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Designed in collaboration with\u00a0<\/span><strong>GSea Design<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the structure has been bulked up in accordance with the lessons learned from the previous boats. The conception of the forward beam has also been revised. \u201cTraditionally, the after face of the beam absorbs the flexural stress while the fairing soaks up the torsional pressure of the platform. However this time we have given the beams a\u00a0<\/span><strong>dual internal structure<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0which absorbs both stresses simultaneously. The fairing contributes to the structure, obviously, but it isn\u2019t essential. If it gets damaged, the boat would retain its structural integrity and would be able to reach a haven safely,\u201d says Xavier Guilbaud.<\/span><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The notable increase in speeds compared to the previous generation of maxi-trimarans, especially when beating in heavy seas, means\u00a0<\/span><strong>the fairings had to be reinforced<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0as they are subject to significant stresses. On\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BP\u00a0XI<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, their capacity for shock absorption has been increased twofold. \u201cA boat like\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Idec Sport<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(formerly\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Groupama\u00a03<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is limited to 18\u00a0knots heading into the wind and waves, whereas the new Ultims can make 30\u00a0knots,\u201d says Xavier. \u201cOn\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Banque Populaire\u00a0XI<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0the carbon-fibre panels of the beams are\u00a0<\/span><strong>designed to withstand 50\u00a0tonnes per square metre<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For comparison,\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Idec Sport<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0was sized for 20\u00a0t and\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Banque Populaire\u00a0IX<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Actual Ultim<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(formerly\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Macif<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) for 30\u00a0t.<\/span><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>A deliberate increase in mass<\/strong><\/span><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It turns out that the weight increase is significant, but this was deliberate.\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maxi Banque Populaire\u00a0XI<\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><strong>weighs in at<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><strong>16\u00a0tonnes, but she also rises more easily<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0than her predecessor, thanks in the main to much larger appendices. Because she is faster, her structure will be put under greater stress. The bottoms of the floats have also been strengthened to compensate for the slamming they experience when they hit the water. Another paradigm shift involved plumping for a\u00a0<\/span><strong>solid glass layup<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0combined with a web of battens rather than a nomex core, as previously used.<\/span><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only has the conception evolved, the techniques are progressing continuously.\u00a0Beams, float mountings and bilges are all now fitted with\u00a0<\/span><strong>fibre-optic cables<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Data acquisition is an integral part of the daily routine for these Ultims, requiring considerable resources in the team to analyse the millions of pieces of information generated by every outing. At sea, the skipper is concerned primarily with crunching other types of numbers, but he can always be\u00a0<\/span><strong>alerted by alarm<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0when one of the sensors goes offline. This is usually a signal for the skipper that he\u2019s pushing his charge too hard and it\u2019s time to slow
