Even the latest models which went into the water shortly before the starting gun did the design firm proud. Architects\u00a0<strong>Quentin Lucet,<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>Xavier Guilbaud<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Antoine Lauriot-Pr\u00e9vost<\/strong>\u00a0give us their assessment of the race and tell us what to expect for 2022, including season highlight the Route du Rhum.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Let\u2019s start with the Ultim class. What\u2019s your take on the performances of\u00a0<em>SVR-Lazartigue\u00a0<\/em>(2nd)<em>\u00a0and<\/em>\u00a0<em>Banque Populaire\u00a0XI<\/em>\u00a0(3rd)?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Xavier Guilbaud:\u00a0<\/strong>The results are\u00a0<strong>very positive<\/strong>. They\u00a0<strong>achieved podium places and fetched Martinique with their racing potential 100% intact<\/strong>, which is remarkable considering they\u2019ve only been in the water a few months. First and foremost the skippers wanted to pile on the experience by getting some nautical miles under their belts. So they didn\u2019t take any undue risks.<br \/>\n<strong>Quentin Lucet:\u00a0<\/strong>You have to admire the remarkable job the technical teams have done in\u00a0<strong>getting to grips with these extremely complex trimarans<\/strong>. They managed to iron out the teething troubles and make the boats reliable in just a few short months. These Ultims were real contenders throughout, and in certain conditions we saw some very interesting runs which substantiated their capacity for higher speeds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>That\u2019s encouraging for the 2022 Route du Rhum\u2026<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Xavier Guilbaud:\u00a0<\/strong>Yes, Fran\u00e7ois Gabart and Armel Le Cl\u00e9ac\u2019h can expect to cross the starting line of the Route du Rhum with boats running like clockwork. We\u2019ve seen that these<strong>\u00a0Ultims can \u201ceasily\u201d maintain high average speeds.<\/strong>\u00a0It\u2019s encouraging for the Route du Rhum and in the long term for the solo round-the-world race [<em>ed. note:<\/em>\u00a0scheduled for late 2023]. We know from experience that it takes a skipper several seasons to master these boats fully.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What do you think about\u00a0<em>Actual Ultim\u00a03<\/em>\u2019s fourth place?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Xavier Guilbaud:\u00a0<\/strong><em>Actual Ultim<\/em>\u00a0remains a very good machine, but she suffered from the weather. We know that she\u2019s less competitive in winds under 12\u201314 knots. In the same conditions the new trimarans will start flying but not\u00a0<em>Actual Ultim<\/em>. We believe that\u00a0<strong>had there been more wind, the results would have been much tighter.<\/strong>\u00a0Her structure is in great shape and has a strong potential for development, such as adding new appendages. She could be a real contender in the Route du Rhum.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Let\u2019s talk about the Ocean\u00a0Fifty class, now. What\u2019s your assessment?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Antoine Lauriot-Pr\u00e9vost:\u00a0<\/strong>We designed\u00a0<strong>four of the seven Ocean Fiftys in the race<\/strong>:\u00a0<em>Koesio\u00a0<\/em>(2nd),\u00a0<em>Leyton\u00a0<\/em>(3rd),\u00a0<em>Solidaires en Peloton<\/em>\u00a0(4th) and\u00a0<em>Groupe GCA\u20131001 Sourires\u00a0<\/em>(6th). None of these boats won but they all crossed the finishing line and their performances were encouraging, in particular the most recent of them,\u00a0<strong><em>Koesio<\/em>, a light boat which behaved remarkably well reaching VMG<\/strong>. In terms of user friendliness, the totally dry living and operating area proved its worth. When a sailor can trim the sails without having to face the wind and the waves, he isn\u2019t going to grumble. It enhances performance over time.\u00a0<em>Koesio<\/em>\u00a0was clearly in with a chance of taking the top spot.<em>\u00a0Leyton<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Solidaires en Peloton<\/em>\u00a0also kept ahead of the pack. As for\u00a0<em>Groupe GCA\u20131001 Sourires<\/em>, she logged some very impressive averages over certain runs and can expect many fine seasons to come. The results are positive and we hope to convert this try in next year\u2019s edition of the\u00a0<strong>Route du Rhum<\/strong>. I\u2019m thinking in particular about\u00a0<em>Koesio<\/em>, I expect her to make huge progress.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In the IMOCA class\u00a0<em>Charal\u00a0<\/em>made it onto the podium, like she did two years ago. Could she have done better?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Quentin Lucet:\u00a0<\/strong><em>Charal<\/em>\u00a0managed to keep in the running with more or less the same set-up she had for the Vend\u00e9e Globe, J\u00e9r\u00e9mie Beyou\u2019s team having decided to concentrate their efforts on the development of his next boat instead. There are\u00a0<strong>plenty of avenues for enhancement on\u00a0<em>Charal<\/em><\/strong>, in particular her ballast tanks and her foils, adding structural reinforcements wherever necessary.\u00a0<strong>It was a bit frustrating not to see the former\u00a0<em>Hugo Boss<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0[<em>ed. note:<\/em>\u00a0now in the hands of Alan Roura] in this latest edition of the Transat Jacques Vabre. The conditions would have suited her. But we can look forward to seeing Alan Roura show us what she can do in the 2022 Route du Rhum.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For the first time a VPLP-designed Class40 crossed the starting line in a race. What\u2019s your take on the performance of\u00a0<em>Emile Henry-Happyvore\u00a0<\/em>(13th)?<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Quentin Lucet:\u00a0<\/strong>This Class40 went into the water a few weeks before the start of the race.\u00a0<strong>She was clearly born under a good sign<\/strong>, because she didn\u2019t suffer any structural issues. We were pleasantly surprised to see Erwan Le Draoulec and skipper Nicolas d\u2019Estais doing so well despite still being in the discovery phase.\u00a0<strong>Speedwise, they held their own against more mature boats.<\/strong>\u00a0We are happy with the design of the hull. We took the time to analyse the existing fleet, identifying the strong points and disadvantages of the other concepts. The work paid off.
