APERIO, THE LATEST CONCEPT BOAT BY VPLP DESIGN<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s become a tradition at VPLP Design to release a new concept boat during the\u00a0Monaco Yacht Show<\/a>, the international show dedicated to superyachts, and this year is no different! For the 2022 edition (28\u00a0September \u2013 1\u00a0October) VPLP is proud to present\u00a0<\/em>Aperio<\/strong>, a forty-six-metre catamaran which features two very different configurations depending on whether she\u2019s sailing or at moorings. Let\u2019s take a closer look.<\/em><\/p>\n

Aperio\u00a0\u2013 from the Latin \u201cto reveal\u201d \u2013 is\u00a0a sailing yacht inspired by the notions of duality and metamorphosis.<\/strong>\u00a0Carrying a pair of 40-metre-high wingsails, she is a 151\u2019 catamaran created by several architects and designers at VPLP Design in collaboration with\u00a0Patrick le Qu\u00e9ment<\/a>, a reference in the design world with whom VPLP has been working for over a decade. What makes\u00a0Aperio<\/em>\u00a0distinct is her ability to take on\u00a0two very different appearances<\/strong>, one when sailing, the other at anchor. \u201cAt sea, the boat\u2019s powerful physique expresses her desire for motion.\u00a0<\/em>She is very sculptural.\u00a0<\/em>The marvellous fluidity of\u00a0the manta ray was the main influence for her design<\/strong>,\u201d says Patrick le Qu\u00e9ment.<\/p>\n

\u201cAperio<\/em>\u00a0is as elegant as she is fast,\u201d says\u00a0Yann Prummel<\/a>, VPLP designer whose notable contributions include, in addition to this latest yacht, the firm\u2019s previous concept boat,\u00a0Seaffinity<\/em><\/a>, which went on display at Monaco last year. We don\u2019t want\u00a0Aperio<\/em>\u00a0to impose herself on the natural world, but instead we want her to be\u00a0coherent with her environment.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>She has a very pure silhouette.\u00a0<\/em>Her lines, sometimes marked, sometimes blurred, constitute a bridge between a natural, biological world and one that is purely technical.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cExpressing the art of metamorphosis\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Once arrived at her destination,\u00a0Aperio<\/em>\u00a0reveals another facet of her design:\u00a0she unfolds to become a veritable holiday home.<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cWe wanted to express the art of metamorphosis.\u00a0<\/em>The boat has two ways of expressing herself, both being equally effective,\u201d says Patrick le Qu\u00e9ment. \u201cAt moorings, you discover a completely new boat,\u201d says Yann Prummel.\u00a0Aperio<\/em>\u00a0extends extra living areas from each side, her structure spreading into\u00a0a much larger space for better accommodating the people aboard.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>In the stern, a mobile platform can be lowered\u00a0<\/em>to create a comfortable gangway linking the two hulls just a few centimetres above the surface of the sea.\u00a0<\/em>We designed it to be a sort of Venetian bridge which provides access to the sterns and the upper deck.\u201d<\/p>\n

The central space is used innovatively: the open flush deck provides\u00a0a very bright and spacious living area.<\/strong>\u00a0Four cabins are isolated from each other but remain connected through this sizeable artery.<\/p>\n

\u201cA technically possible dream\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

What is VPLP Design\u2019s goal in developing this new concept boat?\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s very important for us to show how innovation is a constant factor at the heart of our way of doing things,<\/strong>\u00a0and to present original ideas.\u00a0<\/em>With each concept boat we try to push back the boundaries, break down the barriers, and imagine the future of sailing.\u00a0<\/em>This boat is a dream but she is nevertheless technically possible,\u201d says Yann Prummel. \u201cThis boat leverages all the skill sets within the firm and\u00a0opens new avenues<\/strong>\u00a0that we would like to pursue for a production boat or a special order,\u201d says Patrick le Qu\u00e9ment.<\/p>\n

Aperio\u00a0<\/em>is designed to accommodate up to ten people aboard, as well as five crew members. Who would be interested in a yacht like this? Yann Prummel sees her as \u201ca boat for sharing<\/strong>, where several families embark together.\u00a0<\/em>Installing a coworking space was an important consideration for us, because it allows the boat to be used as a workplace.\u201d<\/p>\n

WHEN LIGHTNESS REQUIRES SOBRIETY<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

For many years VPLP Design has been working on decarbonizing merchant shipping and now the firm is applying the mantra\u00a0\u201clight is green\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0to the cruising world. Let\u2019s take a closer look.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

A RORO vessel powered by wingsails (Canop\u00e9e<\/a>\u00a0which transports parts for the Ariane rocket), foiling passenger ferries (Fast Foiling Ferry<\/a>), the catamaran\u00a0We Explore<\/em>\u00a0partially built with flax fibres\u2026 Over the last few years VPLP Design has developed numerous projects that have\u00a0environmental considerations at their very heart<\/strong>. It\u2019s an approach that the firm also applies to its cruising business through the concept of \u201clight is green\u201d, suggested by\u00a0Xavier Desmarest<\/a>, cofounder of the Grand Large Group which builds Outremers and Gunboats.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis idea comes\u00a0from the various discussions we\u2019ve had with certain customers<\/strong>, both manufacturers and private individuals, who asked us to help them tackle the issues linked to climate warming and the environment,\u201d says Marc Van Peteghem, cofounder of VPLP Design. \u201cIf you have a boat that can sail at more or less the speed of the wind, you\u2019re going to kill the engine when the wind is blowing at 6\u00a0knots and use your sails.If you need more than 10\u201312\u00a0knots to get going, then you\u2019re going to use your engine more often.And in certain parts of the Mediterranean, especially in summer, that\u2019s going to be a lot more often.\u00a0Your average engine time can leap from 20% to 70%, which is huge!<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

This is the origin of VPLP\u2019s response to customers wanting\u00a0to build lighter boats<\/strong>. \u201cThere are two ways of building lighter: either you make everything out of carbon, which isn\u2019t exactly environmentally friendly, or\u00a0you think in terms of sobriety<\/strong>,\u201d says Marc Van Peteghem.\u201cThis concept of \u2018light is green\u2019 encourages us to reflect generally on what family cruising really means. It isn\u2019t about being Spartan, but we could look again at the architecture to make lighter boats that can use their sails more, couldn\u2019t we?<\/p>\n

What practical solutions could lighten<\/strong>, for example, cruising catamarans? \u201cThe answers vary from customer to customer, obviously, as\u00a0we adapt our solutions depending on their needs<\/strong>\u00a0and how the live on board,\u201d says\u00a0Mathias Maurios<\/a>, coordinator of the VPLP Design\u2019s cruising division.\u201cTo some, we can suggest looking into natural ventilation, the best way to circulate airflows via openings in the structure, instead of mechanical air conditioning which adds weight because it needs a generating set.To others, we can suggest limiting air-con to the cabins.For those who wish to reduce weight further, they can always choose to replace ceiling panels with fabric lining.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ideas aren\u2019t in short supply among VPLP architects. They are always ready with solutions for the growing number of customers who are putting environmental considerations at the top of their wish list. \u201cThere is a clear sense that\u00a0attitudes are changing<\/strong>, that our customers are becoming more and more aware of the issues,\u201d says Mathias Maurios.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

CANOP\u00c9E<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span>The\u00a0<\/span>Canop\u00e9e<\/a>\u00a0project to transport modules of the Ariane\u00a06 rocket from Europe to French Guiana achieved a major milestone on 28 June with\u00a0<\/span>the launch<\/a>\u00a0of the RORO vessel\u2019s hull in Poland, where it was built (at the Partners yard). From there, it was moved to the Netherlands where it will be fitted out at the Neptune Marine yard. VPLP Design drew the plans for ship which will be powered in part by\u00a0<\/span>Oceanwings<\/a>, the latter initially developed by the firm.\u00a0<\/span>Canop\u00e9e<\/em>\u00a0is expected to enter service at the end of the year<\/strong><\/p>\n

IMOCA<\/strong>.<\/span>\u00a0Launched on 19 July in Lorient,\u00a0<\/span>Malizia SeaExplorer<\/em>, Boris Herrmann\u2019s new VPLP-designed IMOCA was named on 6\u00a0September in Hamburg in front of several thousand people. Back in Brittany, Hermann took part in the 48-hour crewed event of the\u00a0<\/span>D\u00e9fi Azimut-Lorient Agglom\u00e9ration\u00a0along with three other boats scheduled to run The Ocean Race starting in January 2023.\u00a0<\/span>Malizia SeaExplorer\u00a0<\/em>came in third place. \u201cI\u2019m very happy,\u201d said Boris Herrmann. \u201cThe boat seems to have a lot of potential, so it\u2019s up to us, the crew, to fulfil that potential.<\/span>It\u2019s a huge success for the team to have such a reliable boat so soon after her launch.\u201d<\/span>Elsewhere in the D\u00e9fi Azimut, Swiss skipper\u00a0<\/span>Justine Mettraux made a great debut on\u00a0Teamwork<\/em>, formerly\u00a0<\/span>Charal 1<\/em>\u00a0designed by VPLP, finishing sixth out of twenty-four in the solo event.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

ECO SAILING DESIGN<\/strong>.\u00a0VPLP Design is one of eleven companies taking part in the three-year collaborative project\u00a0Eco Sailing Design<\/a>, launched in late June under the aegis of Brittany Council. The goal is to include these companies in a research and development programme to produce new ecodesign tools.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

AVENIR<\/strong>.\u00a0Late June saw the\u00a0presentation<\/a>\u00a0of the plans for the ship\u00a0Avenir<\/em>\u00a0in Marseilles by the non-profit organization Perou. Marc Van Peteghem and VPLP Design worked on the design of this 67-metre catamaran which includes a hospital. The aim is to launch the boat in 2024. She will carry out life-saving work in the Mediterranean.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

ROUTE DU RHUM<\/strong>. The 2022 edition of the\u00a0Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe\u00a0is turning out to be an exceptional event with a record 138 solo skippers taking the starting line on 6\u00a0November off Saint-Malo. To mark the event, a special VPLP Design newsletter will be released on 24 October, the day before\u00a0the official opening of the festival village!<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
