With\u00a0<\/em>twenty-nine boats<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>crossing the starting line<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0off Saint Malo, VPLP Design was well represented in five of the six categories of this twelfth and latest edition of the\u00a0Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe<\/a>. Let\u2019s get an early assessment from partner architects\u00a0<\/em>Quentin Lucet<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/em>Xavier Guilbaud<\/em><\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n

In the lead-up to the race, the 138 boats tied up in Saint Malo marina gave a fine overview of offshore racing history. And of VPLP Design\u2019s expertise too, with the notable presence of\u00a0Flo<\/em>, formerly\u00a0Pierre\u00a01er<\/em><\/a>, which in 1990 treated the firm to its first taste of success in the Route du Rhum with Florence Arthaud at the helm. A Formula\u00a01 back in the day, the sixty-foot trimaran was preparing to sail once again to Guadeloupe, this time with Philippe Poupon at the helm. Her slender appearance alongside today\u2019s beefier Ultims offered a striking comparison in Vauban docks!<\/p>\n

And the giants of the\u00a0Ultim class\u00a0<\/strong>fought a remarkable battle to secure the top spot in their category, demonstrating \u201ca totally new level of commitment<\/strong>, perhaps that even the skippers themselves would never have imagined at the start,\u201d says Xavier Guilbaud, who worked on almost all the boats in the category, in particular the most recent trimarans\u00a0SVR Lazartigue<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Banque Populaire\u00a0XI<\/em>.\u00a0\u201cThe boats spent between 50% and 60% flying above the water<\/strong>\u00a0and generated a considerable volume of data, which can be leveraged for structural analysis and to recalibrate our digital simulation tools.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fran\u00e7ois Gabart came in second behind Charles Caudrelier on\u00a0Maxi Edmond de Rothschild<\/em>, launched in 2017, which Gitana Team managed to refine and optimize into a highly competitive boat. As for Armel Le Cl\u00e9ac\u2019h, a broken keel forced him to turn back to Lorient after a single day\u2019s racing. \u201cWe\u2019re investigating it in collaboration with the Banque Populaire team,\u201d says Xavier Guilbaud. \u201cWe know that with this type of appendage, we\u2019re dealing with pretty big loads.\u00a0We don\u2019t have an answer yet<\/strong>.\u00a0Banque Populaire\u00a0XI<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0SVR Lazartigue<\/em><\/a>\u00a0only went into the water last year and are, therefore, still at an early stage in their development.\u00a0What they\u2019ve shown us on this<\/strong>\u00a0Route du Rhum is very promising\u00a0<\/strong>going forward.\u201d<\/p>\n

Justine Mettraux confirms her talent,
\nKoesio is the winning Ocean Fifty<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the IMOCA class the level of commitment was once again exceptional. The race saw Justine Mettraux complete her first ever solo race aboard\u00a0Teamwork<\/em>, making a very respectable and universally applauded seventh place.\u00a0Feasibility studies to update the former\u00a0Charal<\/em><\/a><\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>are already underway with a view to competing in the next Vend\u00e9e Globe. Antoine Lauriot Pr\u00e9vost joined the boat for her passage back to Lorient. \u201cThe boat is almost in her initial launching configuration, and\u00a0we\u2019ve mastered new geometries that allow us to extend the scope for using the foils<\/strong>,\u201d says Quentin Lucet.<\/p>\n

Unfortunately\u00a0Malizia-Seaexplorer<\/em>\u00a0was unable to compete with the leaders, as she was hampered early on by technical issues and then deprived of her foils in the trade winds. \u201cBeyond the result,\u00a0the real frustration is not having been able to test this new set-up against the main players in the class<\/strong>,\u201d says the architect. Next stop Alicante in mid-January for the start of The Ocean Race, Boris Herrmann\u2019s main goal.<\/p>\n

In the\u00a0Ocean\u00a0Fifty<\/strong>\u00a0class, Erwan Le Roux\u2019s win just under twenty minutes ahead of Quentin Vlamynck is a satisfying outcome for VPLP. The firm designed\u00a0Koesio<\/em><\/a>\u00a0for downwind sailing. \u201cWe focused on saving weight<\/strong>,\u201d says Quentin Lucet, \u201cmaking the boat the lightest in the fleet. And Erwan did indeed enjoy extra speed in the trade winds thanks not only to the competitiveness of the boat, but also to his extensive experience sailing her and of the race itself.\u201d<\/p>\n

For the next Ocean\u00a0Fifty, commissioned by Fabrice Cahierc and built in the moulds used for\u00a0Koesio<\/em>, the weight advantage will be used to\u00a0refine even more the aerodynamics and ergonomics aboard<\/strong>. The developments will also benefit\u00a0Koesio<\/em>. The efforts to protect the skippers from the elements, a major consideration in the design of the most recent Ocean Fiftys (Koesio<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Arkema<\/em>) also had a positive impact on performance according to Quentin Lucet. This is something Xavier Guilbaud confirms:\u00a0\u201cThe skippers talked about it at the finishing line. It\u2019s obvious that, given the level of commitment and the intense pace, particularly in the first week,\u00a0<\/em>those who were better protected from the elements were able to maintain higher average speeds.<\/em><\/strong>\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\n

We Explore<\/em>‘s worthy endeavour<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the\u00a0Class40<\/strong>\u00a0class, VPLP Design made a grand entrance with four\u00a0Clak40<\/em><\/a>\u00a0lining up at Saint Malo. All arrived at Pointe-\u00e0-Pitre without any problems, the best placed being\u00a0Fondation Stargardt<\/em>\u00a0(Martin Le Pape), finishing ninth. \u201cThe winning formula on the Route du Rhum often involves an architect returning for their second or third time, a yard possessing the experience of several builds, and a mariner having already competed in a transatlantic race. We were left wanting in every department,\u201d says Quentin Lucet.\u00a0<\/em>\u201cWe chose to design the boat for downwind sailing<\/strong>, and in doing so, we knew that we would have a deficit when the wind was before the beam. Clearly we hadn\u2019t fully realized how important the first part of the race would be, but\u00a0it\u2019s given us plenty of ideas for improving performance in the future.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n

VPLP Design was also present in the Rhum Multi class with the\u00a0experimental vessel\u00a0We Explore<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>and her flax-reinforced deck. Skipper Roland \u201cBilou\u201d Jourdain came close to winning, having crossed the line first, but had to be satisfied with second place after receiving a penalty for removing the engine seal. \u201cThe goal was to complete the crossing, but Bilou clearly got into the spirit of the race and pushed his customized\u00a0Outremer\u00a05X<\/a>\u00a0enough to validate the R&D for ocean passage-making.\u00a0<\/em>It was a very worthy human and sporting endeavour<\/strong>\u00a0which starts a new page in the design of tomorrow\u2019s boats,\u201d says Xavier Guilbaud.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
