VPLP Design, the architect of these one designs, is collaborating with several vessels in the fleet to\u00a0<\/em><strong><em>enhance their performance without betraying the philosophy<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0of these sturdy and competitive multihulls. Vincent Lauriot Pr\u00e9vost and Quentin Lucet explain.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The distillation of four generations of ORMA trimarans (from\u00a0<em>Pierre 1er<\/em>\u00a0to\u00a0<em>Groupama 2<\/em>), the MOD 70s were designed to be competitive for at least ten years at the pinnacle of racing. The first boats in the series went into the water in 2010. While the one-design circuit that accompanied their launch was abandoned after two years, a victim of circumstance, these trimarans built by CDK Technologies have<strong>\u00a0never stopped sailing<\/strong>. Vincent Lauriot Pr\u00e9vost, cofounder of VPLP Design, says: \u201cApart from operating accidents, none of the boats ever had a problem with its structure. Back when we were designing them, we identified a dozen recurrent failures on the ORMAs and we took those lessons into account.<em>\u00a0<\/em>The goal was to build\u00a0<strong>multihulls that you could sail without any qualms<\/strong>\u00a0or frequent refits.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>After 2013\u00a0<\/strong>the fleet scattered to the four corners of the globe, undertaking activities as varied as public relations and record-breaking, while some such as\u00a0<em>Gitana XV<\/em>\u00a0(now\u00a0<em>Maserati<\/em>) became platforms for testing offshore multihull foiling.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2020, six of the seven MOD 70s have been meeting in the Atlantic and the Mediterranean (only\u00a0<em>Orion<\/em>, formerly\u00a0<em>Veolia Environnement<\/em>, remains in San Francisco) to race various classics, such as the RORC Transatlantic Race, the RORC Caribbean 600 and the Middle Sea Race.<em>\u00a0<\/em>\u201cThe atmosphere is fantastic because\u00a0<strong>they are owners, not established teams, who are racing for fun<\/strong>, beholden to nobody, and with enough latitude to organize themselves as they wish.\u00a0And they\u2019re often backed up with big names, such as Lo\u00efck Peyron, Brian Thompson and Paul Larsen\u201d,\u00a0says Vincent Lauriot Pr\u00e9vost.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;We don&#8217;t want to risk deteriorating the vessel&#8217;s reliability&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And as if proof were needed that the series has retained its material coherence after all these years, the races often see tight finishes and a healthy rotation on the podium. \u201c<strong>The most recent RORC Caribbean 600 culminated in an 11 second gap between\u00a0<em>Zoulou<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Maserati<\/em><\/strong>\u201d<strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0says Quentin Lucet, partner naval architect. \u201cThe differences in development get washed out in the sailing conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some of the owners want to update their vessels, such as Jason Caroll (<em>Argo<\/em>, formerly\u00a0<em>Musandam Oman Sail<\/em>) and Erik Maris (<em>Zoulou<\/em>, formerly\u00a0<em>Paprec Recyclage<\/em>), and have sought VPLP Design\u2019s help. \u201cOver the last ten years,\u201d says Quentin Lucet, \u201cwe have made enormous progress in terms of foiling, notably through our work on the Ultim class and the IMOCAs. So\u00a0<strong>we\u2019ve been working on a new set of appendages<\/strong>\u00a0for the MOD 70s, the idea being to converge on a common solution without betraying the original philosophy.<em>\u00a0<\/em>The goal is indeed to<strong>\u00a0sail flatter, faster and in greater safety<\/strong>, and certainly not about flying three feet over the waves.<em>\u00a0<\/em>We\u2019ve imposed on ourselves the limit of not reworking the structure because\u00a0<strong>we don\u2019t want to risk deteriorating the vessels\u2019 reliability<\/strong>. The owners appreciate the problem-free aspect of the boats, even after all the nautical miles they have accumulated in their wake.\u201d The crew behind\u00a0<em>Argo<\/em>\u00a0have commissioned new foils from\u00a0<strong>Avel Robotics in Lorient<\/strong>\u00a0(France) and\u00a0<strong>T-foil rudders from C3 Technologies<\/strong>\u00a0in La Rochelle (France).<\/p>\n<p>That the MOD 70s were recognized in 2023 by the IMA (International Maxi Association), which is becoming more open-minded about multihulls, means these one-design trimarans could be about to extend their competitive reach.\u00a0<strong>Entry to gruelling events, such as the Sydney Hobart<\/strong>, would be the icing on the cake. \u201cIt\u2019s not at all unreasonable,\u201d says Vincent Lauriot Pr\u00e9vost. \u201cDuring the initial development of the MOD 70s, a race around the world via the canals was mooted, with a leg from Hawaii to Australia, which would have been three weeks of pretty stimulating sailing.<em>\u00a0<\/em><strong>We built them tough!<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thirteen years after their launch, the\u00a0MOD 70s\u00a0continue to plough the seas and the number of dedicated racing events is increasing, much to the delight of their passionate and demanding owners.
