{"id":20038,"date":"2023-07-04T09:51:19","date_gmt":"2023-07-04T07:51:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev2024.vplp.fr\/actu\/paragon-quand-le-foiling-sinvite-en-croisiere\/"},"modified":"2024-04-30T13:23:15","modified_gmt":"2024-04-30T11:23:15","slug":"paragon-when-foiling-meets-cruising","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/en\/news\/paragon-when-foiling-meets-cruising\/","title":{"rendered":"Paragon: When foiling meets cruising"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How about giving the <\/span><\/i><b><i>superyachts that regularly compete in Mediterranean regattas<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 and whose owners cross the Atlantic in early winter to take part in the best Caribbean events \u2013 the chance to benefit from the <\/span><\/i><b><i>design innovations generated by the offshore racing circuit?<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Inspired by this exciting premise, VPLP Design developed a concept called <\/span><\/i><b><i>Paragon<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an 85-footer which offers unparalleled performance thanks to a canting keel and foils. Partner Naval Architect Quentin Lucet and designer Yann Prummel present the concept.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=AGATUzGDVe4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Images<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> filmed in Porto Cervo last autumn of <\/span><b>the 60\u2019<\/b> <b><i>Flying Nikka<\/i><\/b><b> overtaking <\/b><b><i>Tango<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a Wally Cento one and a half times her size, went viral on the web and social media. Six months later <\/span><b><i>Malizia<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Boris Herrmann\u2019s 60\u2019 IMOCA designed by VPLP, added 23 nautical miles to the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theoceanrace.com\/en\/news\/14183_Malizia-raise-the-bar-set-new-record-and-close-in-on-leaders\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">24 Hour Distance Record<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> held since 2015 by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Comanche<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (100\u2019) \u2013 also designed by our firm, in collaboration with Guillaume Verdier. The record now stands at 641.13 nautical miles for an average speed of 26.71 knots. \u201cAnother big indication that <\/span><b>a paradigm shift in boat design could be occurring<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d says Quentin Lucet.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPreviously, bigger meant faster.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, foils are rewriting the rules.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This observation encouraged VPLP Design to conceptualize <\/span><b><i>Paragon<\/i><\/b><b>, an 85\u2019 yacht featuring a canting keel and foils.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Designed for racing round three buoys and participating in major IRC events (Middle Sea Race, Caribbean 600, etc.), this monohull leverages her foils to make herself lighter and faster, <\/span><b>judiciously exploiting the skimming effect rather than achieving true hydrofoiling. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Digital simulations undertaken by VPLP Design and routings on courses similar to the Middle Sea Race and the Giraglia all point to the conclusion that an 85\u2019 foiler can beat a 100-footer of conventional design. \u201cCompared to a boat of the same size with a fixed keel,\u201d says Quentin Lucet, \u201can 85-footer with a canting keel and foils carries <\/span><b>three tonnes less lead in the bulb<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and weighs only twenty tonnes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>In Pursuit of Perfection<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These figures can also be compared to the fifty tonnes of a 100\u2019 maxi which requires more than twenty crew to handle her in a race.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reductions in weight and stresses across the board suggest that <\/span><b>it will be possible to sail with crews half the size <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of those required on the maxis currently in circulation. \u201cEspecially since <\/span><b>the foils are much easier to handle<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than on an IMOCA, for example,\u201d says the architect.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You set them as soon as you hit 10 knots of true wind, and bring them in when you\u2019re alongside. They don\u2019t increase the ship\u2019s beam.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only does <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paragon<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s architecture disrupt the well-established trends of the yachting world, her style does too. It\u2019s a consideration that appears early on in the general process. \u201cLike the start of any project we undertake, the first thing we do is define the concept<\/span> <b>to find the vessel\u2019s soul and personality<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d says Yann Prummel, designer at VPLP since 2020. \u201cMuch of the creative process involves us immersing ourselves in the context surrounding the project.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We educate ourselves on the latest innovations and trends, and identify the aspirations of our customers long before putting pencil to paper on the drawing board.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Style isn\u2019t just about aesthetics, its purpose is also to resolve problems and <\/span><b>make an object such as <\/b><b><i>Paragon<\/i><\/b><b> unique, flawless and efficient<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while satisfying the expectations of our customers.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On this project, <\/span><b>the team took inspiration from the art of jewellery-making<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to create a mineral-like minimalist concept. \u201cParagon\u201d is also the name of a flawless diamond mined in Brazil. The deck and superstructures were meticulously refined to remove the superfluous, allowing us to focus on visual perfection and the sailing experience. \u201c<\/span><b>The coachroof doesn\u2019t rise out of the deck.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It\u2019s as if, by merging, they produce a faceted and perfectly integrated object,\u201d says the designer. Their fastidious work emphasizes the vast teak deck not only as a space for relaxing but also as the theatre of sailing operations.
