{"id":20037,"date":"2023-07-04T09:54:07","date_gmt":"2023-07-04T07:54:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev2024.vplp.fr\/actu\/comment-vplp-design-a-developpe-un-concept-innovant-de-navire-de-transport-pour-vela\/"},"modified":"2024-04-30T13:23:15","modified_gmt":"2024-04-30T11:23:15","slug":"how-vplp-developed-an-innovative-shipping-concept-for-vela","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/en\/news\/how-vplp-design-developed-an-innovate-shipping-concept-for-vela\/","title":{"rendered":"How VPLP developed an innovative shipping concept for VELA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Looking to develop a fast sailing ship to provide a shipping service between Europe and the USA, the French start-up <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/vela-transport.com\/en\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">VELA<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> asked VPLP Design to explore the range of possibilities in the fledgling sector of <\/span><\/i><b><i>zero-carbon transport of goods by sea<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This led to the <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">design of <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/vela-transport.com\/en\/bateaux\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a 65\u00a0m schooner-rigged trimaran<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which can carry <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">350 tonnes <\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">between Nouvelle-Aquitaine (France) and New York in under two weeks, including loading and unloading. We talk to Simon Watin, partner in charge of VPLP Design\u2019s Shipping Division, and Tanguy Leterrier, lead architect on the project.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the early discussions between VELA and VPLP Design in autumn 2022 it became clear that the ambition of the start-up\u2019s five founders \u2013 Fran\u00e7ois Gabart, Pierre-Arnaud Vallon, Thibault Charles, Micha\u00ebl Fernandez Ferri, Pascal Galacteros \u2013 was to be able to promote a fast sailing ship that could <\/span><b>cross the North Atlantic in under two weeks.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In comparison, a conventional freighter covers the same route in twenty days, loading and unloading included. VELA was adamant that VPLP were to exclude nothing, to explore every possible architectural innovation, including solutions that have hitherto never been tested in the context of shipping.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cInevitably you have to focus on building <\/span><b>very large vessels<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d says Simon Watin, Partner Naval Architect and head of VPLP Design\u2019s Shipping Division. \u201cSo you need a lot of power and a considerable righting moment to ensure good speeds.\u201d While monohull designs are undoubtedly best for heavily laden vessels, multihulls become the natural choice when the volume of the cargo is of greater consideration than its density. \u201cAnd in the case of multihulls, <\/span><b>a trimaran is better than a catamaran<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because its better longitudinal structure allows you to carry the largest possible sail plan without having to double up on all the systems,\u201d says Simon Watin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To validate the concept, VPLP Design felt it necessary to create <\/span><b>two virtual vessels<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that could be put through numerous digital simulations and, in collaboration with the team at MerConcept, routing scenarios between Europe and North America. \u201cA 60\u00a0m monohull with two decks and a 65\u00a0m trimaran with transverse loading,\u201d says Tanguy Leterrier, VPLP Design\u2019s lead architect on the project. \u201cWith the latter <\/span><b>we managed to make significant gains on a crossing<\/b> <b>with the same payload<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, about 350 tonnes, which is equivalent to 560 standard European pallets or 450 US pallets.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><b>A Real Sailing Ship that is<br \/>\n<\/b><b>fast and self-contained<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the result was VELA, a two-masted schooner with a 25\u00a0m beam and an onboard crane. She will always dock port side to and will be <\/span><b>completely independent when it comes to loading and unloading<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an especially important feature when calling at secondary ports along her route. The floats stabilize the platform while the centre <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hull supports the majority of the displacement. Much of the difficulty resided in finding the right geometry and distribution of the volumes to ensure that the floats remain in contact with the water when the ship is sailing empty. <\/span><b>\u201cWe wanted to avoid installing the complex ballasting systems<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that are the bane of the freighter, and which can contribute to spreading invasive species,\u201d says Simon Watin. Aluminium was chosen for the hull material because of the significant weight savings it affords compared to a conventional steel construction, without falling short of the requirements of a working vessel in terms of structural strength.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This desire for simplicity does not exclude compliance with the <\/span><b>rigorous standards of the merchant marine<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, governed by the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). \u201cThat\u2019s why many boats, such as the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grain de Sail 2<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> built by the Piriou yard in Concarneau, are limited to 500 gross tons, which is a threshold between two regulatory regimes,\u201d says Tanguy Leterrier. With a capacity greater than 1000 gross tons, VELA has to comply with <\/span><b>the strictest of standards<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Initial discussions with the French maritime authorities and ship classification organizations to define the regulatory framework which will govern the operation of this new type of ship were also an integral part of the architectural studies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team commissioning VELA want the vessel to sail under the French flag, with a permanent salaried crew, and are currently exploring the possibility of having her built in Metropolitan France. \u201cSeveral yards have the capacity to undertake this kind of aluminium construction.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ship\u2019s beam reduces the number of potential candidates, so assembly could still be performed outside France,\u201d says Simon Watin. Nothing has been set in stone for the rigging either, including the 47\u00a0m masts which both culminate at 55\u00a0m above sea level. They could be aluminium, given the generous angles a trimaran offers, \u201cbut <\/span><b>they will have to be custom made<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because mast extrusions of this size don\u2019t exist off the shelf,\u201d says Simon Watin.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scheduled for launch in 2025, VELA is \u201cthe fruit of an excellent collaboration with <\/span><b>people who are looking for something different and who give precious leeway to designers,\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says Simon Watin. For the start-up team, several more months\u2019 work will be needed to complete the design.
