Canop\u00e9e<\/a>, a cargo ship designed by VPLP Design for transporting sections of the\u00a0<\/em>Ariane 6<\/strong>\u00a0rocket, had her official launching ceremony on 5\u00a0October in Bordeaux and is now getting ready to start sailing between ports in Europe and French Guiana. Her magnificent wing sails were fitted in late August. This innovative vessel has been a catalyst for\u00a0several other VPLP projects<\/strong>\u00a0whose ultimate aim is to contribute to the decarbonization of sea transportation.<\/em><\/p>\n

Reviving wind propulsion as a way of decarbonizing shipping through the development of a simple wingsail, which is automatic and furlable, has been occupying the minds of architects at VPLP Design since 2010, the year\u00a0BMW Oracle Racing\u2019s challenge for the 33rd America\u2019s Cup claimed victory with\u00a0USA 17<\/em><\/a><\/strong>. This VPLP-designed trimaran featured a very original rig centred on an immense, 68-metre rigid wing.\u00a0USA 17<\/em>\u2019s success established a new direction for the firm which, in the words of its co-founder Marc Van Peteghem, aimed to\u00a0\u201ctransfer this technology to the shipping industry\u201d<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In 2018 the\u00a0Ariane Group called for tenders to transport parts of the\u00a0Ariane 6<\/em>\u00a0rocket<\/strong>\u00a0from ports in Europe to Kourou, French Guiana. VPLP drew up a preliminary project centred on a\u00a0RORO vessel rigged with Oceanwings wingsails (363 m\u00b2)<\/strong>, also developed by the firm, and ran simulations on the potential fuel savings. The shipping company\u00a0Z\u00e9phyr & Bor\u00e9e<\/a>\u00a0subsequently joined the project, bringing to the table its expertise in order to adapt the design to the specific constraints of carrying the\u00a0Ariane 6<\/em>.\u00a0Jifmar<\/a>\u00a0and Z\u00e9phyr & Bor\u00e9e joined forces to establish the\u00a0Aliz\u00e9s<\/a>\u00a0shipping company, which then tendered the winning proposal<\/strong>.\u00a0Jifmar Guyane will become the shipowner.<\/p>\n

Launched in late June 2022, the vessel has to comply with considerable technical constraints, such as the transport of fragile and dangerous loads, and is currently undergoing trials at the Breton port of Brest. She was officially named on Thursday 5\u00a0October at Bordeaux and is scheduled to start sailing for French Guiana in the autumn. \u201cWith this project, VPLP Design has added\u00a0an extra string to its bow<\/strong>,\u201d says Marc Van Peteghem. \u201cAnd while there are indeed more and more companies developing sail-based solutions for the shipping sector,\u00a0Canop\u00e9e\u00a0<\/em>is different in that\u00a0we really worked on her lines<\/strong>\u00a0to enhance their hydrodynamic efficiency and suitability to wingsail propulsion.\u201d<\/p>\n

Technology Transfer<\/strong><\/p>\n

For VPLP Design\u00a0Canop\u00e9e<\/em>\u00a0has been a \u201cfounding project\u201d in the sense that it launched\u00a0the firm\u2019s activities in decarbonized shipping under sail.<\/strong>\u00a0Several projects have followed in its wake, such as\u00a0Trade Wings 2500<\/a>, a container-ship project focusing on shipping between subsidiary ports in Europe. Simon Watin, VPLP Managing Partner and head of the firm\u2019s Maritime Division, explains the concept: \u201cHybrid propulsion comprising six Oceanwings wingsails, two electric motors and lower-emission fuels such as e-methanol,\u00a0reducing CO2 by about 35%<\/strong>\u00a0on a typical Atlantic crossing.\u201d<\/p>\n

VPLP Design has exploited other technologies developed in offshore racing (previously the firm\u2019s core business) to accelerate the energy transition in the shipping sector. For example, all three versions of the\u00a0Fast Foiling Ferry (F3)<\/a>\u00a0exploit the\u00a0benefits of foils<\/strong>\u00a0to reduce fuel consumption by approximately 40%. A 24-metre version designed to carry 220 passengers around urban environments is currently being brought to market. Simon Watin gives another example: \u201cWe drew on our experience in multihull ocean racing to\u00a0design the hull<\/strong>, determine the platform\u2019s geometry and study the sea-keeping qualities of the sailing freighter\u00a0Vela<\/u><\/a>.<\/em>\u00a0This 65-metre trimaran is designed to carry goods between Europe and the USA, and satisfies all the requirements of a working vessel while at the same time being very fast.\u201d<\/p>\n

Also following in the wake of the\u00a0Canop\u00e9e<\/em>,\u00a0Pers\u00e9v\u00e9rance<\/em><\/a>\u00a0is a supply ship designed for the Polar Pod expedition, the future drifting oceanographic research station devised by French explorer Jean-Louis Etienne. She launched in Vietnam in the summer. \u201cResulting from a collaboration between Olivier Petit, the architect behind\u00a0Antarctica<\/em>\u00a0(now\u00a0Tara<\/em>), this ship features a reinforced hull, special rigging for extreme conditions, and a launching ramp for the deployment of light auxiliary craft,\u201d says Simon Watin, head of VPLP\u2019s Maritime Division. \u201cThe challenge in all these projects is to find\u00a0a balance between innovation, development costs and return on investment.<\/strong>\u00a0The idea isn\u2019t to create a concept boat.
