While seven Gunboats ranging in size from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vplp.us13.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=3f21a64983f6fe6e7d2e5d44f&amp;id=3b7c206111&amp;e=1023bc8de7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/vplp.us13.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3D3f21a64983f6fe6e7d2e5d44f%26id%3D3b7c206111%26e%3D1023bc8de7&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1696928006913000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3KtDWGcPh5a45SiyV5ZYy3\">Gunboat 68<\/a>\u00a0to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vplp.us13.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=3f21a64983f6fe6e7d2e5d44f&amp;id=4cee4b5276&amp;e=1023bc8de7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/vplp.us13.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3D3f21a64983f6fe6e7d2e5d44f%26id%3D4cee4b5276%26e%3D1023bc8de7&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1696928006913000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2BYekImXbHYuZJabZ70L5b\">Gunboat 72 flybridge<\/a>\u00a0have already gone into the water since last spring, the new\u00a0<strong>Gunboat 80<\/strong>\u00a0represents another step forward for the range of ocean cruising catamarans built by the yard based in La Grande Motte (France).<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<strong>We honoured the brand\u2019s DNA<\/strong>, notably with the inclusion of a cockpit forward and a helm station inside,\u201d says Xavier Guilbaud. \u201cBut we also managed to move the mast further aft, stepping it on the coachroof, which results in a more balanced sail plan and a better centre of gravity.\u201d Unlike her predecessors whose carbon cored layup was infused in-house, the 80 was built entirely with pre-impregnated carbon fibre, a construction process also used on the big racing boats (Ultim, IMOCA).<\/p>\n<p>Because of this, Gunboat decided to outsource the manufacture of the hulls, superstructure and bulkheads to\u00a0<strong>Multiplast<\/strong>\u00a0(Vannes) and\u00a0<strong>Fibre Mechanics<\/strong>\u00a0(Lymington). It took two years to build the first boat. \u201cOn this model\u00a0<strong>we are assemblers<\/strong>, in the best sense of the word. More than ever our expertise lies in our capacity to manage the integration of complex systems in a body whose weight estimate is strictly controlled. Weight estimates are, by the way, a contractual obligation at Gunboat,\u201d says CEO Benoit Lebizay.<\/p>\n<p>This focus on weight began way back in the concept stage, because the boat\u2019s lines and structure were designed for the most unfavourable loading scenario,<strong>\u00a0in this instance 29 tonnes light displacement.<\/strong>\u00a0The second Gunboat 80, which was commissioned by the American Jason Caroll (owner and skipper of the MOD70\u00a0<em>Argo<\/em>) for fast cruising with his family, should be close to this maximum displacement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>An Especially Light First Build<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The design brief was different for the first Gunboat 80\u00a0<em>Highland Fling XVIII<\/em>\u00a0(named after a Scottish dance) which was launched in June for Scotsman Irvine Laidlaw, Baron of Rothiemay.\u00a0<strong>\u201cHe intends to use her exclusively for day racing.<\/strong>\u00a0Which means that the interior fittings were kept to a strict minimum, and he challenged us to make the maximum weight-savings on every item, including on the glazing and the paintwork!\u201d says Xavier Guilbaud.<\/p>\n<p><em>Highland Fling XVIII<\/em>, whose sail plan features no fewer than 6 headsails(!), is considerably lighter and, in the words of her architect, has turned out to be<strong>\u00a0<em>\u201cincredibly responsive and unbeatable in light winds<\/em><\/strong>\u201d. Xavier Guilbaud was able to find out for himself during the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vplp.us13.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=3f21a64983f6fe6e7d2e5d44f&amp;id=a8ac0e9c3c&amp;e=1023bc8de7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/vplp.us13.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3D3f21a64983f6fe6e7d2e5d44f%26id%3Da8ac0e9c3c%26e%3D1023bc8de7&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1696928006913000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1kMKdTXiYo6-F10kfzV36f\">Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup<\/a>\u00a0in early September at Porto Cervo. Her liveliness on the water demands great vigilance from the crew because her twin hulls begin to rise in 12 knots of true wind. This means that sail has to be shortened earlier than it would on the racing cruiser version. Not that it seems to bother her owner who, despite celebrating his 81st birthday in late December, continues to steer the boat when racing, as per the rules of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vplp.us13.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=3f21a64983f6fe6e7d2e5d44f&amp;id=2701773fb4&amp;e=1023bc8de7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/vplp.us13.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3D3f21a64983f6fe6e7d2e5d44f%26id%3D2701773fb4%26e%3D1023bc8de7&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1696928006914000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2jA9tKfEonqj4h0u7Urkxp\">International Maxi Association<\/a>\u00a0(IMA).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s his eighteenth racing boat and\u00a0<strong>the first multihull boat he has had built,\u201d says Benoit Lebizay.<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cWhile he was waiting for the launch, he bought a second-hand Gunboat 68 just to get a feel for her!\u201d For the very first time, the 2023 edition of the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup saw the inclusion of a special multihull class, with times corrected according to the Offshore Racing Congress Rule.<\/p>\n<p>Three multihull boats signed up for Porto Cervo. \u201cTheir presence clearly made an impression on many monohull owners,\u201d says Xavier Guilbaud.\u00a0<em>Highland Fling XVIII\u00a0<\/em>was particularly impressive, finishing second. Requiring a crew of twelve (thanks to hydraulic assistance) instead of the twenty or so you normally see on a monohull of similar size \u2013 and sailing twice as fast \u2013 these catamarans are built to the standards of the very best offshore racers and as such offer\u00a0<strong>an alternative that calls into question the select circle of the Maxi yachts<\/strong>.
