Drawing on the lessons learned from\u00a0The Ocean Race<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0Transat Jacques Vabre Normandie\u2013Le Havre<\/a>, the architects at VPLP Design continue to research and refine their vision of<\/em>\u00a0the ideal IMOCA for the next but one edition of the Vend\u00e9e Globe<\/em><\/strong>. Partner naval architects\u00a0<\/em>Quentin Lucet<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/em>Antoine Lauriot-Pr\u00e9vost<\/em><\/strong>, the latter having sailed on Justine Mettraux\u2019s Teamwork.net<\/span><\/a> for the boat\u2019s return passage, give their analysis.<\/em><\/p>\n

Following a Transat Jacques Vabre Normandie\u2013Le Havre rich in experience,\u00a0Retour \u00e0 La Base<\/a>, which has just concluded at Lorient, will provide the IMOCA crews with additional information on the solo handling of these boats which, in less than a year\u2019s time, will be lining up for the start of the tenth edition of the Vend\u00e9e Globe. \u201cOn the structural aspects the results are generally good<\/strong>, but we saw that certain boats didn\u2019t reach the finishing line scot-free,\u201d says Quentin Lucet. \u201cWe are pleased that we made solidity a design priority for Malizia-Seaexplorer<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/em>because she has completed one circumnavigation and two transatlantic crossings without any trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for performance,\u00a0the latest generation IMOCAs clearly demonstrated that they had an advantage reaching in a breeze<\/strong>, their crews trimming the sails and managing the foils to best effect. Average speeds recorded when reaching VMG in winds stronger than 20 knots \u2013 averaging 23 knots over extended periods \u2013 demonstrated the gains generated by the new hulls with their flatter forefoot, something that\u00a0Malizia-Seaexplorer\u00a0<\/em>proved amply during The Ocean Race, in particular in the South Seas.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe weren\u2019t especially surprised by the average recorded speeds<\/strong>,\u201d says Antoine Lauriot-Pr\u00e9vost, \u201cbut it\u2019s only right to congratulate the crews who managed to drive the new boats at an extremely fast pace. A shout-out to Thomas [Ruyant] and Morgan [Lagravi\u00e8re] who managed to make a difference spending hours at the helm, but\u00a0the six boats that arrived after the winners<\/strong>\u00a0[including\u00a0Teamwork.net<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Malizia-Seaexplorer<\/em>, both designed by VPLP Design]\u00a0didn\u2019t have much distance between them<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0Foils demand constant reinvention<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

 <\/p>\n

Retour \u00e0 La Base and the single-handed events scheduled for 2024 \u2013 The Transat CIC, New York Vend\u00e9e\u2013Les Sables d\u2019Olonne, and the Vend\u00e9e Globe \u2013 will provide additional information on the levels of performance that solo skippers can achieve. \u201cThe goal is to\u00a0find the most versatile foil configurations that can produce the highest average speeds<\/strong>,\u201d says Quentin Lucet. \u201cWe have done\u00a0a colossal job<\/strong>\u00a0on the simulator over the last year to develop an updated version of the 2023 foils which were fitted, in particular, to\u00a0Groupe Apicil.<\/em>\u00a0The design that will be fitted to\u00a0Teamwork.net<\/em>\u00a0this winter is very similar. It favours\u00a0an early lift-off through total immersion followed by self-stabilization<\/strong>\u00a0thanks to the special geometry and structure.\u201d<\/p>\n

Several teams aiming for the 2028 Vend\u00e9e Globe and\/or The Ocean Race 2026\/2027 are already working on new generation IMOCAs which should\u00a0comply with the \u201ccarbon cap<\/a>\u201d which the IMOCA class voted for\u00a0<\/strong>last October and which will come into force next April. VPLP Design teams are currently working on a comparative study of the use of moulds and tools, the types of fibre used and the building methods used for hulls and appendages with a view to limiting the carbon footprint of the sector.<\/p>\n

This in-depth study coincides with a need to remain in contact with performance-focused teams, and therefore to go aboard the boats regularly. \u201cSailing the boats allows us to enhance our knowledge<\/strong>,\u201d says Antoine Lauriot-Pr\u00e9vost, \u201cbut it also ensures we speak the same language as the teams. This is true for everything relating to the handling of the appendages, obviously, but it also provides us with data for the sequencing of all the manoeuvres to ensure the best positions for the fittings. The IMOCAs have become very complex and codified, which means that\u00a0when it comes to performance,<\/strong>\u00a0the difference resides in the details<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n
