{"id":20029,"date":"2024-04-11T09:18:58","date_gmt":"2024-04-11T07:18:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dev2024.vplp.fr\/actu\/arkea-ultim-challenge-brest-nouvelles-exigences-nouvelles-ambitions\/"},"modified":"2024-04-30T13:23:09","modified_gmt":"2024-04-30T11:23:09","slug":"arkea-ultim-challenge-brest-new-requirements-new-ambitions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/en\/news\/arkea-ultim-challenge-brest-new-requirements-new-ambitions\/","title":{"rendered":"Arkea Ultim Challenge-Brest : <br> new requirements, new ambitions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Coming to a close in mid-March with the arrival of the fifth and final skipper (Eric P\u00e9ron), the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.arkeaultimchallengebrest.com\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arkea Ultim Challenge-Brest<\/a>, the first ever single-handed Ultim race round the world, has been a rich source of information for VPLP Design. At a time when several teams are already preparing their participation in next winter\u2019s Jules Verne Trophy, VPLP\u2019s\u00a0<\/em><strong><em>Xavier Guilbaud<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/em><strong><em>Xavier Guisnel<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0(partner naval architect and partner engineer) and\u00a0<\/em><strong><em>Paul Kerdraon<\/em><\/strong><em>\u00a0(performance engineer) discuss the technical aspects and future prospects of the race.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>To say that the winter routine of the teams at VPLP Design was steeped in the Arkea Ultim Challenge-Brest is an understatement. \u201cThe map was totally addictive, and it goes without saying that, for both us and the teams, this was<strong>\u00a0a high-stakes course<\/strong>,\u201d says Xavier Guilbaud.<em>\u00a0<\/em>\u201cAll eyes were on us, so seeing five of the six trimarans cross the finish line was particularly satisfying.<em>\u00a0<\/em><strong>Obviously,\u00a0<em>Banque Populaire\u00a0XI<\/em>\u2019s pit stop occurred too early and\u00a0<em>SVR Lazartigue\u2019<\/em>s<em>\u00a0<\/em>retirement was especially disappointing for us.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Interviewed upon arrival at Brest, Charles Caudrelier (whose performance is applauded by everyone at VPLP) discussed the breathtaking duel that saw him battle Tom Laperche for the first eleven days of the race. In particular, he evoked his sense of relief when\u00a0<em>SVR Lazartigue<\/em>\u00a0was required to reduce pace after colliding with an unidentified floating object (UFO), the risks associated with maintaining such an intense pace being particularly acute for both skippers. Often sailing close to their target speeds \u201c<strong>they drove their boats impressively over a sustained period<\/strong>,\u201d says Xavier Guilbaud.<em>\u00a0<\/em>\u201cThey weren\u2019t far off the 24-hour Distance Record and in particular, Armel logged more than 800 nautical miles a day on several occasions in the Indian Ocean.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Facts that demonstrate the boats have reached maturity or as Xavier Guisnel (VPLP partner engineer) would put it: \u201c<strong>the fruit of the enormous progress achieved over the last five years<\/strong>, of considerable work, and of the productive discussions with the teams sustained over the duration.\u201d<em>\u00a0<\/em>For Xavier,\u00a0<em>SVR Lazartigue<\/em>\u2019s high-speed accident is nothing less than \u201ca very serious warning with a thankfully fortunate outcome thanks to Tom\u2019s cool head, the reasonable weather conditions and the relative proximity of South Africa.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mer Concept will start rebuilding the blue trimaran\u2019s bottom and adding the reinforcements. The other VPLP-designed Ultims will also be getting structural reinforcements. \u201cAll the teams are continuing to invest in systems to detect and avoid UFOs at sea.<em>\u00a0<\/em>As for VPLP, we need to\u00a0<strong>work on the impact force calculations<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>so we can propose more resilient solutions<\/strong>\u00a0in the case of a collision, such as a double centerboard case.<em>\u00a0<\/em>The watertight sections must also be better compartmentalized to limit flooding and the problems associated with the free surface effect,\u201d says Xavier Guisnel.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #6c879a;\"><strong> \u00a0Use servos to make systems more reliable?\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Another lesson learned from the round-the-world race is<strong>\u00a0the cruciality of system robustness throughout the vessel<\/strong>. \u201cSeveral boats were put at a disadvantage for simple fittings failures. I\u2019m thinking in particular of the systems for raising and lowering the appendages.<em>\u00a0<\/em>The next step, therefore, is to<strong>\u00a0investigate the fittings<\/strong>,\u201d says Paul Kerdraon. \u201cWhile we are familiar with their theoretical working loads, the slightest deterioration affects the boat\u2019s capacity to fly. Likewise, we need to continue to make progress on the conservation of the surface state of the appendages because any deterioration accentuates cavitation phenomena at high speeds (above 40 knots) and limits the readiness for taking off at low speeds (25\u201328 knots).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Especially with the prospect of\u00a0<em>SVR Lazartigue<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Banque Populaire\u00a0XI<\/em>\u00a0competing in next winter\u2019s Jules Verne Trophy where\u00a0<strong>all these fittings will be worked much harder than on a single-handed race<\/strong>. \u201cWe need to discuss these fittings with the teams beforehand, using the data summaries from the race, because the boats will be driven much harder by a full crew,\u201d says Xavier Guilbaud.<\/p>\n<p>Prohibited on Ultim class boats,\u00a0<strong>the servo-control of appendages is, however, authorized by the Jules Verne Trophy rules of racing.<\/strong>\u00a0\u201cSeveral teams have been using\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.vplp.fr\/en\/specials\/syd\/\"><em>SYD<\/em><\/a><em>,\u00a0<\/em>our dynamic simulation software, to determine the best configurations of the appendages in connection with the autopilot,\u201d says Xavier Guisnel.<em>\u00a0<\/em>Tested in 2023 prior to the Arkea Ultim Challenge-Brest, and then dismantled for the race, these systems are a new and not-to-be-ignored avenue for enhancing performance.<em>\u00a0<\/em>Paul Kerdraon says: \u201cIt isn\u2019t in medium winds on a smooth sea that you will observe a difference.<em>\u00a0But once the conditions become very intense,\u00a0<\/em><strong><em>the delta between having or not having servos can amount to several
