Looking to develop a fast sailing ship to provide a shipping service between Europe and the USA, French start-up VELA asked VPLP Design to explore the range of possibilities in this fledgling sector of zero-carbon transport of goods by sea. This led to the design of a 65 m schooner-rigged trimaran which can carry 350 tonnes between Nouvelle-Aquitaine (France) and New York in under two weeks, including loading and unloading.

The 12th edition of the Route du Rhum – Destination Guadeloupe gets underway on 6 November with a record 138 solo skippers taking the starting line. Naval architecture firm VPLP Design, for whom the quadrennial solo transatlantic race is of huge importance, has designed twenty-nine* of the competing boats.

But that’s just what Antoine Lauriot Prévost did when he seized the opportunity to crew HUGO BOSS on her 8,000-mile return trip from Cape Town to Gosport, following her withdrawal from the Vendée Globe.

Jean-François, a life-changing meeting

Jean-François de Prémorel, a mainstay of the Jeanneau boatyard and a major figure in French sailing, passed away on 14 July 2020 at the age of 64. His meeting with Marc Van Peteghem and Vincent Lauriot-Prévost was a decisive event for VPLP. The firm’s founders pay their respects.
