Friendship Ambulance 40'

How do you reach isolated local communities on a Bangladesh delta with emergency medical care – to carry a medical team of up to 15 people or to evacuate two patients with their families? We came up with a catamaran concept that can enter shoal and difficult waters, be seaworthy and ride comfortably.

The project came with an incredibly tight budget so we set up a local yard and designed a boat that could be built using local labour and materials. It was important that this was a local project: so in future others could be built; and there is always local knowledge to keep the vessels in good repair.

Result: for the first time the Jamuna delta communities are served with modern medical services using an affordable means of transport.

We continue to work in Bangladesh, developing sustainable materials for the marine environment and working with local skills.
